Chapter 128: Public Displays of Affection
Half an hour later, Zhang Wei walked out of the infirmary.
As the first Earthling to obtain a mutant gene, he received some special treatment: Jean Grey had personally healed his leg injury. The other mutants, who had previously been lukewarm, were much friendlier toward him now.
"Welcome to study at the academy in the future," Cyclops said, opening his arms as they parted ways. Zhang Wei gave him a light hug. Several tourists queuing at the entrance watched the two men interact with curiosity, whispering among themselves about what might have happened.
After walking a good distance away, Zhang Wei looked back once more at the high iron gates. Withdrawing his gaze, he took a long stride with his fully recovered right leg. Feeling the renewed vitality in his body and watching his keychain orbit him before flying back into his pocket, he couldn't help but let a smile tug at the corners of his mouth.
The ability he had acquired was only at level one; it would take over a hundred years to reach level four. Even studying at the X-Mansion would take at least a decade. Yet, he was content. He had already transcended the status of an ordinary person. Based on his previous discussions with his organization, once he achieved results, he would undoubtedly be groomed as a key talent. His future was boundless!
After walking for a while, his excitement gradually subsided. "I should report this as soon as possible," he thought to himself.
Twenty billion. Even the billionaire Ma might not be able to produce that kind of capital immediately. Before he could reach for his phone, it rang. It was the official who had been his primary point of contact. The man offered his congratulations, arranged to meet him that evening, and mentioned that the organization had special arrangements for him.
Zhang Wei was not surprised that they knew about his superpowers so quickly. It was common knowledge worldwide that Mr. Joe, the person in charge of the Fantasy Park, had a close relationship with the government of the Rabbit Nation. Otherwise, countries led by the Eagle Nation would never have stood by and watched the Rabbit Nation claim the majority of the entry quotas; they would likely have tried to share the right to mint currency or even turned the area into a neutral zone. One former president had even suggested that they should be willing to risk nuclear war to achieve "fairness," which was why neither he nor his relatives had ever been granted entry qualifications.
Hanging up the phone, he smiled with relief and walked briskly toward the fitness plaza. Seeing a dark-complexioned volunteer, Zhang Wei stopped.
"Hello," he said, approaching the man. "Do you know where Wang Yiyi is?"
"Wang Yiyi?" the young man asked, looking surprised.
"It's okay, if you don't know her, I'll ask someone else," Zhang Wei said, assuming the man wouldn't know her. Apart from a few fixed positions, the volunteers here rotated monthly, so it was normal for them not to know everyone.
"No," the young man said, eyeing him curiously. "You two know each other?"
"Yes," Zhang Wei nodded.
"Relatives?"
"No," Zhang Wei replied. "We're friends."
The young man wore a knowing expression and chuckled, "You’ve got quite the ambition, kid."
Zhang Wei blinked, bewildered.
The young man continued, "You’re actually setting your sights on one of the goddesses of the Administrative Center."
"The Administrative Center?" Zhang Wei frowned.
"Don't tell me you don't know!" the young man said. "Everyone is coveting the eight single goddesses in the Administrative Center."
Coveting? Zhang Wei was not pleased. That was his future wife!
"I really know her," he insisted.
The young man patted his shoulder. "Brother, I've seen these little tricks of yours a dozen times before. If you really knew her, you’d just call her directly. Why would you come here to ask?"
"I want to surprise her," Zhang Wei explained. He had chatted with Wang Yiyi on WeChat until late last night, spending the rest of his time searching for how to please a girl. That was where he had learned about "creating surprises."
The young man looked at him with disdain. "Buddy, you're only a little fairer-skinned than me. I've sent eight love letters and haven't received a single response. Why should you be the one giving her a surprise?"
"Maybe I'm just special," Zhang Wei said. Normally, he was quite serious and only showed a different side of himself in front of his grandfather. But the series of surprises over the last two days had made him want to joke around for once.
Just as the young man was about to retort, he saw the other man's pocket move. A metal keychain flew out, circled the two of them twice, and hovered in front of him. The keychain held a nail clipper, two keys, and a metal ear pick. The four small items were all pointed directly at him.
The young man froze, taking several seconds before he finally gasped, "Holy crap!"
"You lucky bastard, you got Magneto's power!" The young man grabbed Zhang Wei's shoulder.
Although he tried to remain calm, Zhang Wei couldn't help but smile. "Just lucky," he said.
"Brother, I'm Wan Kang. I didn't even get Magneto's ability, and you did!" the young man said excitedly. "What's your name?"
Wan Kang... Zhang Wei raised an eyebrow. "Do you know Zhang Yang?"
"Zhang Yang? How are you related to him?" Wan Kang asked, surprised.
"We were roommates in college," Zhang Wei replied. "My name is Zhang Wei."
"So it's you!" Wan Kang laughed. "I've heard him mention you—you gave up your graduate school recommendation to insist on joining the frontline combat troops." He reached out and draped an arm around Zhang Wei's shoulder warmly. "Come on, it's lunch time. Let me treat you to a boxed meal here."
Zhang Wei grabbed the key floating in the air and said, "I'll go find her after I eat."
"You still won't give up?" Wan Kang laughed. "Those women have very high standards. I heard that a young billionaire with a net worth of a hundred billion pursued one of them and was still rejected."
"I really know her," Zhang Wei argued.
Wan Kang stopped and looked him up and down. "No way?" He asked again, "How long have you known each other?"
"Two days—no, one day, actually," Zhang Wei said.
Wan Kang looked at him with a strange expression.
Zhang Wei wanted to explain further, but his phone suddenly vibrated. He pulled it out and saw a message from Wang Yiyi asking where he was.
"Getting ready to come find you," Zhang Wei replied.
Wang Yiyi sent back a "shy" emoji, thinking to herself that this guy wasn't as dense as he seemed. However, she waited for a long time without receiving a second message. Zhang Wei, meanwhile, gripped his phone nervously, waiting for her to reply. As for that "shy" emoji, he didn't count that as a real response.
About a minute later, Wang Yiyi sent another message: "Come to the bottom of the office building, I'll wait for you."
Zhang Wei had arrived at the meal distribution point with Wan Kang and could smell the rich aroma of food. Seeing the message, he hesitated, looking at Wan Kang with a conflicted expression. Wan Kang, meanwhile, was filled with mixed feelings. He had snuck a peek at their conversation. According to the chat, the other person really seemed to be one of those eight women.
What kind of cheat code did this guy use? Not only did he get Magneto's powers, but he also had a goddess fawning over him! Seeing his hesitant demeanor, Wan Kang felt a bit depressed. "Go on, don't worry about the feelings of a single dog like me."
Zhang Wei said sheepishly, "Can I take two boxed meals with me?"
Oh, come on... Wan Kang felt like spitting blood. He had wanted to say that the Administrative Center had its own separate catering that was much better than theirs, but seeing Zhang Wei's expression, he could only nod and say, "I'll get them for you."
He felt like he wouldn't be able to eat his lunch anymore. He’d been fed enough dog food for one day.
