Chapter 92: The Leader of the Monarch Protection Sect!
The chief commander said calmly, “You died so easily. What about your father? If his spirit in heaven saw you walking down the path of crime and ultimately being used by the Cult of Protector, even if he were alive, he’d be driven mad with anger.”
Ashan shouted furiously, “Don’t you dare speak ill of my father. You have no right.”
The chief commander snorted coldly. “You little bastard, feeling guilty, huh? The more you feel guilty, the more I want to show you how wrong you are—dead wrong. That incident back then was witnessed by everyone, and there’s surveillance footage to prove it. Just wait, you’ll regret it.”
Old Huo sighed. “Chief, let it go.”
The chief commander brusquely shook off Old Huo’s arm. “Let it go? What nonsense. You’ve felt guilty all along, searching for Guo Zhengxin’s family for two or three years. Even now, you’re still sending people to inquire about their whereabouts and visiting Guo Zhengxin’s grave every month to drink your fill. Now, this good-for-nothing son of his is being used by the enemy and is about to be killed. Guo Zhengxin hasn’t even been avenged properly yet—that alone is outrageous.”
With that, the chief commander made a call.
Seeing the chief commander take such a serious tone, Ashan grew frightened. I knew he was scared of the truth.
But reality is often cruel, especially when it encounters someone as pragmatic as the chief commander.
Within half an hour of the call, all the case files from back then were laid out before Ashan. The chief commander took out one tape and played it on the computer.
Soon, the facts of that year were laid bare.
Ashan was in despair. He closed his eyes and tears fell like broken pearls.
The chief commander excelled at delivering the final blow. “And now we suspect that the one who fired the gun back then was someone from the Cult of Protector. You’re quite filial, haha, you’re the most filial person I’ve ever seen…”
Old Huo helplessly patted the chief commander’s shoulder. “Enough, young man, why bother arguing with him?”
The chief commander looked meaningfully at Ashan. “Here’s a gun. Kill whoever you want. Look up at your father in heaven—aren’t his eyes filled with sorrow? No, he must be laughing. He never amounted to much in his life, just a security guard at a nursing home, but his son turned out well—holding a high position in the Cult of Protector and even infiltrated the police. A real mole.”
Old Huo grew angry. “Enough, Chief, I say you’re overdoing it.”
The chief commander sighed deeply and lit a cigarette.
Ashan looked at the gun, smiled bitterly, then suddenly burst into tears. “Give me bullets. Give me bullets.”
Of course, the gun the chief commander tossed to Ashan had no bullets. Anyone with a shred of common sense would know that.
The chief commander squatted down, picked up the gun, and said, “Watch closely.” Then he pulled out the magazine, which was fully loaded.
Damn!
Li Xingchen’s legs went weak, and he collapsed off the stool. “I say… Chief, there really are bullets in that gun.”
The chief commander gave an embarrassed smile. “I forgot to unload it just now.”
“I’ve failed my father. I’ve failed my master. Just kill me already,” Ashan began to plead bitterly.
The chief commander glanced at him contemptuously. “Kill you? That would be too easy. Tell me, how many people have you helped the Cult of Protector kill?”
Ashan said, “Many people. I’m worse than a beast. Don’t make me suffer anymore. I want to die—give me a quick death.”
---
Old Huo sighed. “Ashan, it’s not too late to repent. I’ll vouch for you. Serve your time in prison and reform properly.”
Ashan cried even harder. “Master, I don’t deserve to be your disciple. Please, grant me death.”
The chief commander kicked Ashan. “Get lost. It’s not that easy to die. Now here’s your chance for revenge. Tell us everything you know about the Cult of Protector.”
Ashan immediately agreed. “Alright, I’ll tell everything.”
The chief commander looked at me. “Yu, this one’s on you.”
I nodded and took the sobbing Ashan away.
Ten minutes later, I presented the report to the chief commander. After reading it, he slammed the table. “Tomorrow, we wipe out the Cult of Protector once and for all!”
Old Lin also received the report and nodded calmly.
Old Lin smiled broadly at Old Huo. “Huo, how about tomorrow we each take a gun and go to the battlefield? Whoever kills the most wins.”
Old Huo rolled his eyes. “Stop bothering me.”
Old Lin laughed. “So you’re admitting defeat?”
Tang Jingjing thought Old Lin was going too far and pulled him aside. “Alright, Old Lin, let’s get some rest first. There’s a big day tomorrow.”
The chief commander laughed heartily. “Everyone get some rest early. Tomorrow, we catch them all in one fell swoop.”
---
The next day, at four in the morning, a team lightly equipped marched on foot from the city to near Shuiguang Cave.
Shuiguang Cave lies within a remote forested mountain outside the suburbs.
Usually deserted, inside the cave now was bustling with voices and bright lights.
Leading was the chief commander. Li Hong was not with the team—he preferred solo missions.
A few of us walked amid the group, protected absolutely by numerous experts.
“Li Hong, go scout the situation,” the chief commander said. “You’re good at this.”
Li Hong nodded immediately and vanished like a ghost into the woods.
Ten minutes later, Li Hong returned and reported that all enemy sentries had been neutralized, and several armed desperados remained inside. If we rushed in now, we could quickly seize control.
The chief commander nodded and ordered the armed police to stealthily move forward, emphasizing that all members must be captured—no one was to escape.
Everyone echoed the order, and the team moved out.
The chief commander personally guarded us and, for our safety, issued each of us a handgun.
Soon, the chief commander received a message from the front line: “Team deployed, requesting next orders!”
“Go in and control everyone. Shoot to kill if they resist!” the chief commander said casually.
---
I said, “Chief, it’s too easy. Be careful—it might be a trap.”
The chief commander smiled. “Do you expect it to be like on TV, bullets flying everywhere, heavy weapons blazing, like a Hollywood blockbuster? That’s just the movies. In reality, these people won’t resist; they can’t stand up to a real army.”
I thought that made sense.
“Bang bang bang bang… whoosh whoosh whoosh…”
No sooner had I spoken than gunfire and screams erupted inside, making me break out in a cold sweat. Still, I trusted our forces and Li Hong’s power—he was swift as lightning, capable of taking on five men at once. Surely no one inside could stop him.
Soon a report came: “Successfully controlled all personnel.”
The chief commander said to wait; we were going in now.
With that, the chief commander swaggered inside with us.
---
The enormous natural cavern was filled with all kinds of offerings, permeated by a foul stench.
At the center lay a large coffin, its contents unknown.
Inside, I saw our men—terrorists were all subdued. Li Hong approached us, holding his handgun, his posture imposing, a bit of blood spattered on his face.
Around twenty cultists had been restrained by our soldiers, but they looked fearless, clearly no match for the chief commander.
After all, the chief commander lacked evidence to charge them with murder. A few bugs alone could not serve as proof.
The chief commander scanned the cave and asked with a smile, “Who is your leader?”
“I am,” a middle-aged woman answered darkly.
“Should I call you queen?” the chief commander teased. “What are you all doing here in this gathering?”
The woman sneered coldly, saying they were at most guilty of believing in a cult, not engaging in sabotage or murder, so we couldn’t do anything to them.
Indeed, this was troublesome. So far, there was no solid evidence proving the Cult of Protector had killed anyone.
The chief commander’s gaze swept over the crowd and finally settled on Officer Wang.
He walked to Officer Wang with a complex expression. “Heh, isn’t this Officer Wang? I grieved for your death before, but turns out you were a traitor all along. What a brilliant escape. If it weren’t for Old Lin and the others, I might never have known you were alive.”
Officer Wang looked pale. “Let me go. I want to settle this with the cult leader.”
“Too late for regrets now,” the chief commander said. “Do you know what I hate most? People like you who betray from within. Were you the one who killed those criminal investigation experts involved in the case?”
