In just a few words, Shen Xueying secured Jiang Chen’s opportunity to join the Night Punishment Division.

Then, she ordered everyone to clean up the scene, dispose of the bodies of the deceased Zhao Silai and others, and strictly forbade anyone from leaking the truth about their deaths.

Lv Santong couldn’t quite understand why Shen Xueying would go to such lengths for just one Jiang Chen.

They were the prestigious Night Punishment Division, yet now they were cleaning up after someone else and covering up the truth. It was undeniably humiliating.

But Shen Xueying was the most powerful figure currently within the Night Punishment Division. No one dared to defy her decisions, though internal suspicion was inevitable.

“You needn’t harbor doubts. I’m only trying to recruit talent for the Night Punishment Division. People like Jiang Chen are rare. In time, the facts will prove to you that this decision was the right one.”

Mao Wuying asked, “But from what I see, he doesn’t seem very interested in joining the Night Punishment Division. We may not be able to force him.”

“Times change, and so must my methods,” Shen Xueying’s eyes gleamed with determination and confidence.

Jiang Chen and Han Yuyang, having narrowly escaped, stealthily returned to the rented courtyard. It was already past noon, and they hurriedly explained the situation to Wu Yue and Duanmu Qing.

Upon learning that Han Yuyang was being pursued by the Night Punishment Division, Duanmu Qing anxiously said, “Since the Night Punishment Division has discovered us, we can’t stay here any longer.”

“But we can’t find a truly safe place right now. What should we do?”

As the four discussed their options, a frail old man in dull brown clothes shuffled out and, without hesitation, joined the conversation.

“I know a good place where no one in the entire city will be able to find you.”

Jiang Chen turned to look—it was the old man he had helped earlier that morning.

The old man had since bathed and changed into clean clothes, looking much more spirited, completely shedding the ragged beggar image.

“Old sir, you should rest. But don’t worry, even if we move, you can continue living here.”

“No, I’m telling you there’s a place suitable for you. Don’t you want to see it?”

The four exchanged glances but didn’t take the old man seriously. Considering his previously homeless and shabby appearance, the place he mentioned was probably some bridge underpass or a ruined temple.

Such places might be inconspicuous but hardly ideal hideouts. So Jiang Chen and the others merely smiled politely, not intending to listen further.

Just as they were preparing to leave, a knock sounded at the door.

Jiang Chen glanced at Han Yuyang, signaling him to hide for the moment while he went to see who it was.

At the front gate, peering through the gap, Jiang Chen saw none other than Yu Wenshi, the Deputy Minister of Justice, and his son Yu Yuanliang standing there.

“Those two? What are they up to, finding their way here?”

Jiang Chen was puzzled but opened the door and stepped outside. He sensed this might be an unexpected opportunity, perhaps he could use this father and son pair to his advantage.

“Are you looking for me?”

Yu Wenshi rubbed his hands nervously, clearly in a supplicant posture, which only added to Jiang Chen’s confidence.

“Master Jiang, you saved my life that day, and I have yet to repay that kindness. So today, I specially came to invite you to my residence for a talk.”

Yu Yuanliang, shedding his usual arrogant demeanor, followed behind his father, nodding repeatedly in agreement.

“I see. Very well, when shall we go?” Jiang Chen replied promptly, almost eagerly.

Their reaction caught the Yu family off guard. They had expected to have to persuade Jiang Chen, but it turned out to be far easier than anticipated.

“Master Jiang’s acceptance is wonderful news. We shall depart at once!”

Yu Wenshi had already prepared the carriage, just waiting for Jiang Chen’s nod.

“But I have a few friends very close to me. I can’t just leave them behind and go visit your home alone, can I?”

Jiang Chen suddenly changed his tone, making his real intention clear.

“Your friends are my friends as well, Master Jiang. Please bring them along. We have arranged a banquet tonight at my residence, hoping to accommodate you and your companions.”

“Very well, let’s go.”

Seizing the opportunity presented by Yu Wenshi and his son’s visit, Jiang Chen brought everyone along to the Deputy Minister’s mansion.

Along the way, Han Yuyang remained silent. Yu Wenshi did not realize that among the esteemed guests he had humbly invited was the very fugitive the Ministry of Justice had been relentlessly pursuing.

Upon arrival at the Yu residence, a sumptuous feast awaited them.

Yu Wenshi respectfully seated Jiang Chen at the main place and humbly said, “Master Jiang, to be honest, I have an impertinent request and hope you will consider it seriously.”

Before even touching the food, Yu Wenshi revealed his heartfelt plea.

“Deputy Minister Yu, is there anything I can assist you with?” Jiang Chen asked knowingly.

Yu Wenshi recounted how he had been targeted by vicious villains and narrowly escaped death. Every time he thought of that perilous ordeal, he felt a lingering fear.

Now, he was too frightened to go out casually. Even at home, he felt someone lurking in the shadows intending to kill him.

“My nerves are frazzled, living in constant fear. If this continues, my health won’t hold up. So I wish to invite Master Jiang to stay at my residence. If you can protect my family’s safety, I would be deeply grateful.”

“Of course, I have prepared ten thousand taels of silver as your reward. What do you think, Master Jiang?”

Jiang Chen remained outwardly composed but was already considering the feasibility of this arrangement. Yet, he could not agree so easily; he had a condition that Yu Wenshi must accept.

Feigning hesitation, he fell silent after pondering for some time.

Yu Yuanliang gathered courage. Since his father had caused this stir, he too felt as if someone was watching him with malicious intent whenever he went out. It troubled him greatly.

He appealed to Jiang Chen, “Brother Jiang, we are not strangers. My father sincerely invites you to reside with us; please don’t refuse.”

“If the terms are not sufficient, we can negotiate further.”

Jiang Chen seized the moment to say, “I understand Deputy Minister Yu’s intentions, but I am a person who abhors loneliness. I need to spend time with my friends every day to avoid boredom.”

“If I live at the Yu residence, I fear I won’t be able to meet with them conveniently.”
