I stumbled over to her and asked, “Sister Yang, are you all right?”

Sister Yang smiled brightly. “I’m fine.”

As she spoke, she tried to stand, but her body swayed unsteadily a few times before collapsing back onto the sofa.

I reached out to help her up. “Sister Yang, can you get up?”

She mumbled, “Sorry, I may have drunk too much. Feng, can you help me upstairs?”

In truth, I was drunk too, but I could not bring myself to refuse.

So I stepped forward and helped her to her feet. “All right, I’ll take you upstairs. Sigh, who told you to drink so much?”

When I lifted her, the mingled scent of perfume and alcohol drifting from her body stirred a riot of thoughts in me.

I supported her as she staggered up to the second floor, pushed open her bedroom door, and, stumbling all the way, laid her down on the bed.

Then I reached to move her hands away, but to my surprise, Sister Yang gripped me tightly and said, “Feng, don’t go. I’m afraid of the dark.”

I thought that I could not betray the feelings of years gone by. Enduring the ache in my heart, I gently moved her arms aside while comforting her. “Sister Yang, don’t be afraid. I’ll sleep downstairs. No bad person will come in.”

At last I managed to free her arms. Who would have thought that the moment I stood up, Sister Yang would lift her upper body, stretch out her arms, and pull me back again.

I was already half-drunk and completely unprepared, so I immediately fell forward onto her body...

Sister Yang said, “Feng, don’t go. Stay with me tonight. I’m afraid of the loneliness of this endless night.”

I wanted to refuse, but I could not bear to. While I was still hesitating, her lips had already come to mine.

What was I to do? For a young man full of vigor and blood, with such softness and fragrance in his arms, it was truly hard to resist. So be it. In any case, sooner or later I would have to betray those old feelings.

What, after all, had my painful persistence ever been for? So-called love, so-called devotion—they were all, in the end, nothing more than a dream, an empty dream.

Under the stimulation of alcohol, I finally gave up that meaningless stubbornness. Just as I was preparing to go one step further, my phone rang again, as if by some ghostly trick of fate.

I thought, Damn it, why does my phone always have to ruin things at the most crucial moment?

I did not want to answer, but the ringing was maddening. Just as I was about to turn it off, some unseen hand seemed to make me press the answer button.

A girl’s voice came from the other end. “Feng, where are you? I want to see you.”

Hearing that faintly familiar voice, I could not help asking, “Who is this?”

The woman’s voice was soft and sweet. “It’s me, Yun. I’ve been in Clear Creek for several days. I want to see you and talk to you about something.”

Realizing it was Yun calling, I felt both pleasantly surprised and strangely hurt. I was glad that she had not forgotten me, yet pained by the fact that we were fated to meet but not to belong to one another. She was a woman far beyond my reach.

I said, “Yun, we were destined to meet but not to be together. I’m not worthy of your elegance. If there’s nothing else, I’ll hang up.”

Yun said, “Of course I have something to talk to you about. I’ve already obtained all the records of what happened to you back then. If you don’t want the woman you care about to be dragged into this, you’d better come see me.”

The moment I heard her use Golden Jade Lotus to threaten me, I hurriedly said, “Where are you? I’ll come see you right away.”

Yun said, “I’m staying at the Clear Creek Grand Hotel, but I’m out on the street right now. Where are you?”

I thought to myself that I had been drinking and could not drive to see her. Besides, I didn’t even have a car. So I said, “I’m on the outskirts of the Economic Development Zone. I’ll send you the address later.”

Yun replied, “All right. I’ll drive over and pick you up.”

When Sister Yang saw that I had hung up, she asked curiously, “Who was that?”

I said, “A friend.”

Sister Yang smiled faintly. “A girlfriend, I suppose.”

From the slightly jealous tone in her voice, she did not seem to be truly drunk. I said, “Not exactly a girlfriend, just someone I know.”

Sister Yang looked a little reluctant. “Then you’re going out to see her?”

I sighed helplessly. “She has something she needs to talk to me about. I have no choice but to go.”

Sister Yang said, unwilling to let it go, “Could you wait half an hour before going to see her?”

I understood what she meant. Forcing my heart to harden, I said to Sister Yang, “I’m sorry...”

Then I put on my coat and left in a hurry.

As I stepped outside, Sister Yang came after me with a coat draped over her shoulders. When we reached the living room downstairs, she threw herself at me...

Only then did I truly understand what it meant to be passionate as fire. It only stoked my desire all the more. She really was no novice in matters like these...

Those words flashed through my mind of their own accord: a pretty widow, a woman in her prime...

I really could not hold back any longer, but this truly was not the time. Yun was still waiting for me.

I forced my heart to harden and said, “Sister Yang, until we meet again.”

Sister Yang stopped her movement and said, “I’ll wait for you to come back.”

Indeed, bold women have a way of ensnaring a man’s heart. I found myself somewhat bewitched by her, so I said, “Don’t worry, Sister Yang. When I have time, I’ll come see you.”

With that, I pushed gently out of her embrace and hurriedly fled. I was afraid that if I did not leave at once, I would not be able to hold out much longer.
