Chapter 47 Luring the Monsters
Just like the location where Gyula had placed his Nether Palace this time, the spot where the worker collective wanted to break through corresponded to a real-world location in the southern swamp plane; it was not something he could choose at will.
Based on his calculations, Gyula found the exact spot directly beneath where the worker collective intended to break through, and began setting things up with a large quantity of alchemical potions.
Among the alchemical potions Gyula had brought, the majority were spider-silk-type potions, intended to trap them for a period of time once they broke through the spatial barrier.
At the same time, as a poison master, Gyula had specifically prepared numerous poisons for those workers, all tailored specifically against that type of worker.
Of course, this was all Gyula’s own guesswork, combined with the data he had gathered from his previous battle against that mechanical monster. Whether the final outcome would be as effective as he imagined, Gyula was not entirely certain.
After setting up the terrain, Gyula began arranging his subordinates. The skeleton archers were the only ranged troops he had available to deploy, and naturally, they could not be placed at the very front to act as cannon fodder. Therefore, Gyula found a spot with a direct line of sight to the center of the battlefield and stationed them there.
To ensure the skeleton archers could play their due role, Gyula even had the skeletons pile up a low mound of earth here for the skeleton archers to stand upon.
The troops meeting the enemy head-on would be the plague zombies and gold skeletons. Both were troops with relatively high vitality. The gold skeletons specialized in defense and were meant to draw the enemy's attention, while the plague zombies had only one objective: to inflict all the venom they carried on their own bodies, as well as the poisons given to them by Gyula, onto the enemy.
The remaining skeleton squads were positioned all around. The moment the enemy came down, they would enter the battlefield under Gyula's command. If things went poorly, they would scatter and flee under his orders, figuring out a way to lure the enemy elsewhere.
After confirming that all his troops were in position and battle-ready, Gyula finally produced a few items.
These were things Gyula had instructed Ralph to acquire over the past few days, and only Ralph could have obtained such items in so short a time.
These were not particularly important items; they were merely personal belongings of the deceased workers' relatives. Gyula placed these items on the ground, alongside a large quantity of alchemical potions.
Then, raising his Staff of Death, Gyula began to chant, "Dory Fitch, can you hear me? You are the only boy in your family, and your mother and sister are missing you. Come back, come to the Underworld, and you still have a chance."
"Billy Evelyn, do you still remember your wife and son? If you continue refusing to return to the Underworld, you will forget all of this."
With every line Gyula chanted, he pointed to one of the items he had brought out. At first, it elicited no reaction, but soon the face attempting to break through the spatial barrier in the sky distorted. The original face actually morphed into different shapes, as if they were fighting for control over the body.
Gyula watched all of this unfold before his eyes. He chanted continuously, and after finishing all the names, Gyula started repeating them. As his chanting went on, the mouth in the sky suddenly let out a roar.
The sound did not pierce through the spatial barrier, but Gyula could see a series of ripples forming across it.
Amidst these ripples, an arm was forcibly thrust out. That arm was more than four meters long, looked exceptionally strong, and its surface was covered in green fur.
When the arm extended, a look of joy flashed across Gyula’s face; he knew his plan had succeeded halfway.
Next, it would depend on just how capable that worker collective truly was.
At that moment, Gyula raised the Staff of Death in his hand, upon which the fully charged lightning coral was mounted. Without waiting for the arm to make any further moves, Gyula unleashed a bolt of lightning straight at it.
That bolt of lightning meant nothing to the arm, but it was precisely this that provoked the arm and the worker collective behind it.
The lightning-charred arm swung in the air, and the face behind the spatial barrier roared once more as a second arm stretched out from behind.
Following that, the spatial barrier was forcibly torn open, and Gyula finally laid eyes on the monster he had to face.
It was an amalgam formed by the gathering, piecing together, melting, and fusing of over twenty worker corpses. The two green arms, each about four meters long, were merely its primary appendages. Flanking these two arms were twisted faces that seemed to crowd and squeeze against one another.
There were about eleven or twelve faces here, but only four heads. The remaining faces were all embedded onto a chest that resembled a mass of flesh, leading down to a body composed of irregular chunks of flesh and bone.
This monster had no legs; over forty arms sprouted from the lower half of the green mountain of flesh, making it look somewhat like a fleshy centipede. As it squeezed out of the spatial barrier, Gyula also noticed that some of those arms had already turned bone-white, while others had turned gray.
Because this monster was still somewhat immature and had forcibly breached the spatial barrier, Gyula noticed that it was clearly uncoordinated, and strange fluids were dripping from the mound of flesh formed by its melted physique.
Crawling out of the spatial barrier, the monster did not pounce down immediately. This creature appeared to be only about twenty meters long in total, yet the spot where it had forcibly broken through the void was nearly a hundred meters off the ground.
Gyula suspected that the creature had possessed the ability to tear through the spatial barrier much earlier. The reason it had dragged things out until now was not to fuse into something stronger, but rather because it wanted to position its landing point right on the ground.
After all, for a mass of flesh this large, crashing down from the sky would surely cause damage to the monster itself.
However, the current situation favored him. Gyula lifted the Staff of Death, and his troops quickly cleared a path, while Gyula released another bolt of lightning toward the monster in the sky.
To be honest, the power of Gyula's lightning was not particularly strong, but to that monster, it served as a provocation.
This time, the lightning struck the monster directly in the face. The monster let out a roaring bellow and, regardless of the fact that it was still over a hundred meters above the ground, it lunged heavily downward, hurtling directly toward Gyula's position.
Watching the monster plunge toward him, Gyula had no intention of retreating. Raising the Staff of Death, he let out a great shout.
"Gale."
The monster was so massive that ordinary wind would have been utterly incapable of moving it. However, Gyula's gale was somewhat different; it was tied to his mental power, and furthermore, this wind was naturally designed for use with sailing ships. If wind could move something as heavy as a ship, there was no reason it could not blow this monster away.
Driven by the gale, the monster's trajectory was deflected just enough, and it crashed heavily onto the ground right in front of Gyula.
