Chapter 27: Eliminating the Mercenaries
Seeing the mercenary’s attitude, the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman’s expression did not change in the slightest, but her words did not pause. “Is this why you lured me here? I cannot say you seem particularly powerful. Still, I saw those little gadgets you used. They were very well made, but you used them at the wrong time. You are not a combat-oriented professional, are you? You must be someone who specializes in making small devices…”
As she spoke, the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman took out several small bottles.
During this period, she had been in charge of managing the Alchemy Hut, so she naturally possessed a number of fine alchemical potions. Moreover, most of Liu Zhi’s poisons were kept in her custody. In truth, the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman could be considered a wealthy little heiress.
Although she did not care much about the mercenary before her, she had still made every possible preparation for her own safety.
Then one of the spider legs behind her thrust forward, stabbing toward the mercenary standing on someone else’s rooftop.
This time, the mercenary did not dodge. Instead, he charged straight at the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman.
This was the third time he had launched a direct assault against her. The methods he had used during the first two attacks had left her somewhat flustered, so this time she was fully prepared. As the mercenary rushed forward, she raised both hands, and a mass of webbing carrying a green aura sprayed toward him.
This was a new variation among the several kinds of webbing at her disposal. Once sprayed out, it could not only bind an enemy but also inflict a certain degree of venomous paralysis, eventually leaving its victim unable to struggle.
It could be said to be an enhanced ability of the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman, one that also reflected her own careful consideration.
But Liu Zhi had already used it twice when he first recruited her. During the second encounter, the mercenary had even been caught by it. If he had not brought medicine with him, he might already have been killed by the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman. How could he possibly fail to guard against it when making his choice this time?
As the webbing sprayed toward him, the mercenary lowered his head and slammed his hand against the floor. A spiked board sprang up from behind him and pressed toward the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman.
At the instant it emerged, the spiked board happened to collide with the webbing she had sprayed out. The strands immediately spread across the board, forming a web.
That alone would not have been a problem, but the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman had one fatal flaw: whenever her webbing struck an enemy, it instinctively pulled backward, dragging the victim toward the spider.
This was not truly her own intention. It was simply the instinctive motion of a spider.
Yet the mercenary had taken that into account. As the webbing dragged her forward, the spiked board came crashing down upon the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman from above.
Had she been an ordinary spider, she might already have been crushed to death. But she was an undead creature. After being struck by the spiked board, she did not retreat. Instead, she lunged forward.
Her six spider legs spread to their greatest extent, forcibly supporting her entire body. At the same time, four or five masses of webbing sprayed toward the mercenary from different directions. She refused to believe that he could set up any more spiked boards here.
To be honest, the mercenary had not expected the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman, who appeared to be a spellcaster, to endure such an attack. Those were spiked boards, after all, and he had forged every spike on them himself. In the past, he had used them to catch giant lizards, and they had never failed to bring one down.
Confronted by the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman’s webbing, the mercenary moved swiftly. Once again, he triggered a whole series of mechanisms, but there were no more devices like the spiked board on the rooftop.
What emerged this time were things such as spears and crossbow bolts. Once entangled by the webbing, they were nowhere near as effective as the spiked board, serving only to hinder the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman for a moment.
Taking advantage of that opening, the mercenary retreated some distance. He quickly ran toward the highest point of the rooftop. There was another relatively large mechanism waiting there, but it was considerably more dangerous. Unlike the earlier mechanical traps, this one contained lamp oil and incendiary gel.
Once activated, it would set the surrounding houses ablaze, and the mercenary had no desire to do such a thing.
After all, his opponent was only targeting the Blood Servant Master for now. As long as he proved that he had nothing to do with the Blood Servant Master, he still had a chance. But if he set this place on fire, he would lose even the opportunity to escape.
The mercenary ran there only because he wanted to secure a chance to save his life.
But after taking merely two steps, he suddenly felt the ground beneath his feet give way. All strength left his body.
Before he could react, several masses of webbing sprayed onto him and swiftly bound him tight.
Looking at the mechanism only two steps away, the mercenary’s heart filled with unwillingness. He shouted, “I know who the Blood Servant Master is! Let me go, and I’ll tell you…”
Before he could finish, one of the Fate-Spinning Spider Woman’s spider legs descended from above and stabbed directly into the center of his back.
The mercenary spat out a mouthful of blood, staining the white webbing wrapped around his body red.
The Fate-Spinning Spider Woman then flicked her hand, and the webbing lifted the mercenary’s corpse into the air. She glanced at the mechanism on the rooftop, but ultimately did not go toward it. Instead, she picked up one of the poison bottles she had thrown down at the beginning and headed toward the direction of Liu Zhi’s battle.
By then, the battle between the Corpse-Soul Naga Vednina and the swordsman was also nearing its end.
Compared with the mercenary, who preferred fleeing and laying traps, the swordsman was a normal supernatural being. He was the sort who had forcibly trained a single sword style to the supernatural level, much like the sailors Liu Zhi had encountered in his previous game.
Of course, the swordsmanship he practiced was considerably more powerful. Moreover, the swordsman possessed a certain amount of talent. Thus, when his swordsmanship reached the supernatural level, he successfully took up a supernatural profession as well: the Swordsman.
This was a variation of the Warrior profession, somewhat weaker than the Sword Saint. Swordsmen could wear various kinds of leather or chain armor, but most of their combat strength still lay in the long swords they wielded.
This swordsman was no exception. After exchanging blows with Vednina, he displayed the extraordinary nature of his swordsmanship.
It was an open and upright style of swordsmanship. Whenever he drew his sword, it gave people the impression that he was justice itself, that he was defending justice.
This sensation existed on a spiritual level. When facing his longsword, one would feel an oppressive force bearing down upon the mind.
But Vednina was far stronger than ordinary people. She possessed four arms and could wield four different sword styles simultaneously. Thus, at the very beginning of the battle, Vednina actually advanced of her own accord, attempting to force her way through the swordsman’s defenses.
