The matter that had weighed so heavily on Lin Xi’s mind had finally come to light, and the great stone in her heart was laid to rest.

Wen Yiming and Jiang Ziqi paid the price for their actions and were punished by law. Jiang Ziqi was sentenced to prison, while Wen Yiming was sentenced directly to death.

Lin Xi also told Wen Jin the entire story from beginning to end. She had never imagined that her father could be such an utterly vile devil—that, for the sake of his own selfish desires, he had caused Xiao Xi and her parents to be separated by life and death, and had even gone so far as to commit a crazed kidnapping. She felt not the slightest sorrow for him. Instead, she apologized to Xiao Xi and told Lin Xi to put her mind at ease, saying that she would simply regard herself as having no father.

Lin Xi was deeply moved. She had now completely let go of the obsession in her heart. She would no longer entangle herself in the past, but would turn her attention toward the future. She knew that her parents were watching over her from heaven, so she would live well and make every day meaningful.

It was said that on the day of the execution, Sun Yao had actually gone to the courthouse and wept bitterly before Wen Yiming. Lin Xi was rather surprised. She had not expected Wen Yiming’s wife to be such a sentimental person. Still, she was a pitiful woman.

With the burden finally lifted from her shoulders, her elder brother and Xiu hurried back to work once the Wen Yiming affair was over. Only Lin Xi, the great idler, remained on vacation.

That day, Lin Xi was curled up in the small lounge of Lu Yuxiu’s office, clutching snacks and watching a television series. She was enjoying herself immensely.

Then a call came in from Mi Ya.

“Sister Xi, filming for Interstellar has officially wrapped. Promotional activities will be held in Country Y soon. We need to leave for Country Y as quickly as possible to cooperate with the publicity campaign. I’ve already informed Sister Zhou Xin.”

“All right!” Lin Xi replied cheerfully, crunching her potato chips loudly.

After the call ended, Lin Xi immediately trotted over to Lu Yuxiu.

“Xiu…”

He was buried in his work. Without even raising his head, he reached out, pulled her onto his lap, and settled her there.

“What is it?” Lu Yuxiu asked, turning toward her and leaning over to kiss the corner of her lips.

“I won’t be able to keep you company for a while. I have to go to Country Y soon for promotional activities.” Lin Xi cupped his face in both hands and rocked it from side to side.

At her words, Lu Yuxiu frowned, and the arm around her waist tightened slightly.

Lin Xi laughed smugly and pinched his cheek. “Don’t miss me too much.”

After a moment of thought, he spoke in an indifferent tone. “That works out perfectly. I should return to headquarters for a look anyway. I’ll go to Country Y with you.”

“What?” Clearly, this had been beyond her expectations.

“What? You don’t want me to?” Lu Yuxiu stared straight at her, a hint of teasing gleaming in his eyes.

“How could I not? Of course I’m happy.” She hurriedly shook her head. “I’m just a little surprised.”

He reached out and pinched her delicate cheek as well, narrowing his eyes. His dark gaze was deep and captivating.

“So don’t even think about getting rid of me.”

Headquarters? Wasn’t Starlight a domestic company? Did it have a headquarters in Country Y as well? Lin Xi was puzzled, but she still did not ask.

Lu Yuxiu naturally noticed her hesitation. He merely gave her a meaningful smile and said, “Tell your assistant that we’ll be taking a private jet. There’s no need to book tickets.”

“Oh, all right.” Lin Xi answered hesitantly, as though she wanted to say more.

Just as the two of them were being sweet and affectionate, the office door was suddenly shoved open with tremendous force.

“Lin Xi!” Gu Yao stormed in, his eyes blazing with fury, looking as though he had come to settle a score.

Wen Jin followed behind him, her face full of speechless resignation.

“Fourth Brother? Xiao Jin?” Lin Xi turned her head and stared at them in stunned confusion.

Gu Yao had already been seething with anger. Now, upon seeing Lin Xi sitting on that bastard’s lap, he became even more furious.

“Get down! What kind of behavior is it for a young woman to sit on a man’s lap?”

Lin Xi had no idea what was going on. She looked toward Wen Jin and saw her desperately signaling with her eyes. Lin Xi instinctively stood up and slipped out of Lu Yuxiu’s arms.

Fortunately, Lu Yuxiu did not stop her.

“Why are you here?” Lin Xi asked as she took two steps toward them.

Gu Yao’s face was livid. Gnashing his teeth, he roared, “You little brat! You think you’re so capable now, do you? You actually dared to deal with death-row criminals all by yourself? What would have happened if something had gone wrong?”

The shouting brought Lin Xi back to her senses. She blinked and explained, “Fourth Brother, you’re underestimating me too much! I was put through demonic training by Big Brother. Dealing with those two little nobodies was a piece of cake. I barely had to exert any effort.”

She pursed her lips unhappily. Her fourth brother truly thought too little of her.

“Stop pretending! What effort did you exert? The only thing you exerted was your appetite—you just got fatter! Did you really have to go alone? Couldn’t you have called more people? Do you think you’re invincible? What if your illness had suddenly flared up?” Gu Yao’s eyes blazed like fire as he let out a cold snort.

Lin Xi froze for a moment at his words, then became angry herself.

Still, she understood that her fourth brother was worried about her. He simply expressed it differently.

An idea came to Lin Xi. She immediately pulled a sorrowful expression, moved toward Wen Jin, hooked her arm around hers, and looked at her pleadingly for help.

Seeing her pitiful expression, Wen Jin could not help bursting into laughter. Then, pretending to be perfectly serious, she nodded and said to Lin Xi, “You didn’t know this, but your fourth brother was overseas attending an event. The moment he heard about what happened to you, he took the earliest flight back. He was frantic with worry.”

“Who said that? I wasn’t worried about her at all! This heartless little brat!” Wen Jin’s words instantly shattered Gu Yao’s act.

“All right, stop being so stubborn. If you weren’t worried, why would you have come back so quickly?” Wen Jin exposed his true feelings without mercy.

“Hmph!” Gu Yao snorted coldly, rendered speechless.

Seeing this, Lin Xi seized the opportunity to pour him a glass of water and handed it over, giving him a way out.

“All right, Fourth Brother, don’t be angry. Nothing happened to me. Don’t you believe me?”

She looked at him with sincere eyes, though a flicker of amusement gleamed within them.

Gu Yao happened to be thirsty. Though reluctant, he accepted the glass and took a large gulp. The very next second, he spat it out and shouted, “Damn! It’s scalding!”

“Hahaha!”

Lin Xi and Wen Jin burst into loud laughter, showing him no mercy at all.

Gu Yao could only suffer in silence. Somewhat awkwardly, he rubbed his nose, then happened to glance at Lu Yuxiu and began shifting his target.

“Lu Yuxiu, you’d better show some restraint. I’m telling you, I haven’t agreed to let my sister be with you yet! You’re still under observation. Don’t you dare do anything improper!” Gu Yao threatened him fiercely.

Wen Jin was nearly speechless. She quickly grabbed Gu Yao by the arm and pushed him toward the door.

“We’re leaving for now. We’ll come back for dinner tonight.”

“Good!” Lin Xi beamed with delight, then added one last jab at her fourth brother. “Fourth Brother, remember to drink plenty of hot water!”

Before leaving, Gu Yao gave her a cold laugh. “Why, thank you.”

Lin Xi stuck out her tongue at him childishly. “Nyah-nyah-nyah!”

The two siblings bickered every time they met. If they did not trade blows with their words, they felt uncomfortable all over.

As for Lu Yuxiu, he had not said a single word throughout the entire exchange, yet had somehow been dragged into it anyway. He was clearly the most innocent and aggrieved of them all.

Still, he had come to understand that his beloved was very well protected by her brothers.

Whenever he saw Lin Xi with her family, he could always glimpse another side of her—the mischievous, lively, childish girl she was beneath everything else. He hoped he could preserve that innocence for her, so that she could remain this happy forever.
