Chapter 3: The Dream of a Billion Girls
"Nothing major, just a comprehensive physical examination." Gu Yu took her hand to the dining room, personally fetched bowls and chopsticks from the kitchen, and prepared a dipping sauce of soy sauce and vinegar.
"What does his father do? Why isn't he taking responsibility for him?"
Gu Yu’s hand, holding the chopsticks, paused for a moment before returning to normal. "Five years ago in Hong Kong, Nuannuan was involved with a married man and had little Feng. Recently, the man’s legal wife found out and wanted to end both their lives. Nuannuan had no choice but to return to Beijing to seek protection."
Tang Xi had not expected Gu Nuannuan to have such a history, and she felt a sudden sense of melancholy.
"How long do they plan to stay at our house?"
Gu Yu glanced at her cautiously, probing, "Although we have other properties, little Feng has lacked paternal love since he was a child. If we leave him be, he will surely go astray. Since I am his uncle, it is my responsibility to guide him."
Tang Xi looked up, as if unable to believe it. "Do you mean he is going to live with us permanently?"
Since their marriage, the two of them had been inseparable and deeply affectionate; for the sake of convenience, they hadn't even hired more than one servant. Furthermore, she truly could not bring herself to like that child.
"Wife, please don't be angry yet." Gu Yu reached across the table and took Tang Xi’s hand. "I promise you, I will find a suitable solution to this matter as soon as possible. Nuannuan and little Feng are my family; I cannot stand by and do nothing. Wife, haven't you always said that family is our strongest support?"
Looking at the sincerity and pleading in Gu Yu’s eyes, Tang Xi’s heart softened, and she ultimately agreed.
After the meal, Gu Yu had to head to the company. His film and television company had been growing steadily, successfully going public last year. When Gu Yu first took over the Gu family business, it had been nothing more than an obscure little talent agency. Tang Xi, whose specialty was costume design for film and television, had created custom looks for several dramas that received widespread acclaim in the industry. One of them, "The Millennium Legacy," even won the Best Costume Design award at the Golden Bell Awards.
Gu Yu's company gained significant attention and recognition as a result. Later, as the company grew, Gu Yu felt the work was too demanding and encouraged Tang Xi to stay home and enjoy a life of leisure. Having always been passionate about antiques and jade, she simply turned her attention to developing this hobby after stepping away from costume design.
"Did you have any gains from your trip to Hong Kong?" In the dressing room, Gu Yu spread his arms as Tang Xi held a tie, measuring it against his chest.
"I picked up a few trinkets." Hong Kong hosted several antique auctions every year, all grand and professional in scale.
"I heard Mr. Zhou also went. Did you see him?"
The Mr. Zhou mentioned by Gu Yu was a prominent figure in Hong Kong. Gu Yu had ambitions to collaborate with the Hong Kong film industry and certainly wanted to establish a connection with such a man.
In truth, Tang Xi had seen Zhou Jingchuan. Not only had she seen him, but she had also been unexpectedly invited to his private banquet. However, they had been separated by a table throughout the meal, and no interaction had occurred. Although the Gu family’s company had risen to prominence in Beijing, it was not yet significant enough to catch his attention. She suspected the person in charge of invitations must have made a mistake with the list.
"I saw him, from across the crowd."
Gu Yu raised an eyebrow, looking a bit regretful.
In fact, there was one thing Tang Xi had not told him. She had never met Zhou Jingchuan before, yet she felt a faint sense that he looked remarkably like an old acquaintance. It had been ten years; she had almost forgotten what that person looked like. It felt like a dream, as if from a different lifetime.
Gu Yu kissed her on the face. "I heard that Mr. Zhou is the dream of millions of girls. I was really worried that you might have had some contact with him."
"How could that be?" Tang Xi smiled. "I have a husband who is both handsome and successful."
Gu Yu’s eyes warmed, and he cupped her face to kiss her.
They lingered for a while longer before Gu Yu finally got into his car to head to the company. No sooner had he settled in than his phone rang.
"Brother," Gu Nuannuan’s pampered voice came through. "Little Feng wants to eat shumai, but I don't know where to buy it."
Gu Yu glanced at his watch. "Alright, I'll be there now."
He sent a message to his assistant, telling him to postpone the morning meeting. Half an hour later, Gu Yu arrived at the hospital. As soon as he pushed open the door to the patient’s room, Gu Nuannuan threw herself into his arms and wrapped her hands around his waist.
