Chapter 28: Give Me One Last Chance
Half an hour later, Gu Yu spotted Tang Xi inside the café.
She was wearing a cream-colored cardigan over a grass-green camisole, revealing her porcelain-white, slender neck and gracefully shaped collarbones. Tang Xi’s beauty was not flamboyant but enduring, like a gentle stream—stunning at first glance, and intoxicating upon every subsequent encounter.
Gu Yu had already noticed that the men passing by couldn't help but be drawn to her. One young man, distracted by his gaze, even knocked over a waiter’s tray.
He sat down across from her, shielding her from those brazen stares.
"Wife, why is your complexion so poor? Are you ill?" Gu Yu reached out, desperate to take the hand she had resting on the table.
Tang Xi calmly gripped the handle of her cup, causing his hand to grasp at empty air.
"Did you sign the papers?" she asked, looking up at him with eyes that were utterly indifferent.
A sharp pain pierced Gu Yu’s heart. He had never seen such a cold expression on her face before, and he was struck by panic.
"I know you are angry, and I know I was wrong. I failed to stand by you unconditionally when you needed me most."
Tang Xi’s lips curled into a faint smile.
See? He knew everything, yet his heart and his words were never in alignment.
It was just like those who claim to love you while stabbing you in the back—impossible to defend against.
"Wife, are you angry because of Wennuan and Xiaofeng?"
Gu Yu looked at her. Her eyes were impossibly beautiful, and they were the feature he loved most—affectionate and gentle, as if they could speak.
"Wife, I promise you, Gu Wennuan is just my younger sister, and Xiaofeng is my nephew. There is nothing else between us, nothing at all."
If this were the Gu Yu of the past, Tang Xi would have believed him.
But now, she only trusted what her own eyes had seen. Regardless of the nature of his relationship with Gu Wennuan, it no longer mattered to her. Perhaps Gu Wennuan had orchestrated much behind the scenes, but it was he who had truly brought them to this point.
"When I fainted in the rain, you were comforting Gu Wennuan and her son. When I had a fever of forty degrees, you were accompanying them to the zoo. When my throat was so sore that I struggled to breathe, you were cooking dinner for them by hand. No matter what happened, you chose to believe them without hesitation, never me. Gu Yu, tell me, is this what you call 'nothing'?"
"Yes, I admit, I did look after them more, but only because they are my family. Wife, please, give me one more chance. I promise, this is the last time. No matter what you say or do in the future, I will believe you unconditionally, all right?"
Tang Xi remained unmoved. Opportunities? She had already given him three!
"Wife, I’m begging you, okay?" Gu Yu suddenly moved to where Tang Xi sat and knelt directly before her. "I was truly wrong. Give me one chance, just one. Wife, I really cannot live without you. Without you, I will lose my mind."
His hands gripped her knees, his gaze shimmering with tears.
Gu Yu was crying.
Although the café was not crowded, the scene had drawn the attention of everyone present. Whispers filled the air, and the curious onlookers cast brazen, inquisitive glances at the pair.
Gu Yu was naturally tall and possessed a handsome face comparable to a celebrity; already, some were pulling out their phones, intending to take photos or record videos.
Tang Xi disliked being watched like this, as if she were a monkey in a zoo.
"Gu Yu, get up."
"If you promise to give me one more chance, I will," Gu Yu insisted, clutching her hand and pressing his face against it. "Wife, you know how much I love you."
"Let go of Xixi." Tang Qiushuang walked over and shoved Gu Yu away. "If you have any shred of manhood left, solve all these problems before you come begging for Xixi’s forgiveness. Otherwise, don't just say Xixi won't give you another chance—the Tang family won't let you get anywhere near her again."
Hearing Tang Qiushuang’s words, Gu Yu stood up from the floor, the light in his eyes returning as if he had suddenly found a new direction in life. "Aunt, rest assured, I will definitely make Xixi forgive me."
With that, he strode out of the café with purposeful steps.
