Wolves.

They were a very special kind of group.

Wolves possessed exceptionally high intelligence, as well as the ability to cooperate and work together as a team.

Once they set their sights on prey, escape became extremely difficult.

This was a pack driven mad by hunger.

The heavy snow had sealed off the mountains and deprived them of many sources of food. From time to time, it even forced the wolves to risk entering human territory.

In extreme circumstances, they would even attack people of their own accord.

Like today.

When the dozen or so wolves discovered a group of humans before them, they did not retreat.

Instead, they bared their teeth and crept forward.

The bandits were a thoroughly arrogant lot. They had no regard whatsoever for the beasts of the mountains.

Two of them approached, weapons in hand, laughing as they walked.

“Well now, the wolves in these mountains are pretty big.”

“No matter how big they are, they’re still just beasts. I haven’t had meat in ages. This is perfect—today we’ll have roast wolf.”

Naturally, the group was delighted.

There was only so little meat on the rabbit, and there was no need to guess who their leader would give it to.

But a wolf would provide far more meat.

These men were far too conceited.

Sure enough, the moment they charged forward, the wolves turned and fled.

The two men were still wondering what was happening when four wolves suddenly rushed at them from the side.

Instinctively, the men turned to face the four wolves.

That exposed their backs.

The fifth and sixth wolves pounced on them with lightning speed.

“Ah!”

Their screams rang out, summoning the others.

Seeing that someone had been injured, the remaining bandits grabbed their weapons and ran over furiously.

But the wolves had no intention of lingering in battle. After biting one of the men, they immediately turned and fled.

Their four legs moved across the snow as though it were level ground, and their agility was astonishing.

In no time, they had escaped beyond the bandits’ range of attack.

When the bandits stopped pursuing them, the wolves actually halted as well and began slowly closing in.

Tian Zhuang could not help swallowing hard at the sight.

He had just begun to move when Chu Feng’s voice came from beside him.

“If you don’t want to become the wolves’ target, don’t move recklessly.”

The bandits were dumbfounded.

They could neither advance nor retreat.

Seeing this, Zhao Youtian could not help cursing, “You useless fools!”

Then he pulled a black stick from his bundle.

Because of the distance, Chu Feng could not make out what the black object was. He assumed it was some kind of fire poker.

The moment Zhao Youtian finished speaking, the wolves moved again.

The rabbit had been roasting over the fire the entire time.

The fragrant smell of sizzling fat had driven the men completely out of their minds.

The wolves charged at them from every direction.

The bandits gritted their teeth and fought the enormous pack.

Unfortunately, they had almost no formation at all.

Each man fought for himself.

To make matters worse, they were fewer in number than the wolves.

Before long, people began to suffer injuries.

Some were even dragged across the snow by the wolves.

Some were wounded; others fell and could no longer rise.

One man had his throat bitten through by a wild wolf.

Death erupted among the group.

In the end, the cold and the deep snow restrained them. On top of that, the men kept throwing themselves forward recklessly.

The number of bandits soon began to plummet.

Only then did Tian Zhuang finally understand Chu Feng’s purpose in hunting.

He stared at Chu Feng in shock.

“You… you calculated all of this from the beginning?”

The two men lay in the snow, their bodies completely covered in white. No one had noticed them.

Chu Feng cast him a sidelong glance.

A cold smile touched the corner of his mouth.

Bang!

The smell of gunpowder spread across the entire plain.

Chu Feng’s body instantly stiffened.

His eyes did not blink as he stared ahead, in the direction of Zhao Youtian.

The man was still holding what looked like a fire poker.

A wisp of smoke drifted from its muzzle and slowly dispersed.

A gun?!

Clearly, Zhao Youtian was not very skilled at using the weapon in his hands.

The shot struck the ground beside one of the wolves, frightening it badly.

In a panic, Zhao Youtian pulled out an iron rod and a small pouch.

He stuffed the contents into the muzzle, then used the rod to ram them down the barrel.

“Hold them back! I’m loading the gunpowder!” Zhao Youtian shouted.

But he was far too slow.

He had also greatly overestimated the loyalty of the other bandits.

A wolf leaped forward and knocked Zhao Youtian to the ground.

Only then did he manage to blow his tinder alight.

The smell of gunpowder reached Chu Feng’s nostrils.

The shock in his heart did not diminish in the slightest.

Bang!

Another shot rang out.

This time, Zhao Youtian finally hit a wolf.

Unfortunately, the wolf did not lose its ability to fight, even though the bullet had torn through its thigh.

“Awwoo!”

The wolf that had been hit appeared to be the leader of the pack.

The pain completely awakened its savage nature.

The wolves attacked with even greater fury.

Zhao Youtian could only flee toward the snow shelter.

“Now’s my chance!”

Tian Zhuang did not seem particularly curious about the fire poker. The presence of the wolves had shown him an opportunity.

If he did not move quickly, his sister might also be killed by the pack.

“Idiot.”

Chu Feng still did not move.

As expected, the moment Tian Zhuang rose, the wolves spotted him.

Having found a new target, the pack immediately changed direction.

Tian Zhuang gripped his knife and watched nervously as the wolves charged toward him.

He thought a fierce battle awaited him.

But he never imagined that halfway there, the entire pack would suddenly stop.

Then they turned and ran in another direction.

Tian Zhuang was puzzled, but in the end he let out a sigh of relief.

“Could it be that they were frightened by my regal presence?”

The next moment, he smelled a foul, bloody stench.

A huge shadow appeared before him.

It was as though a wall had risen behind him, shielding him from the wind and snow.

Tian Zhuang turned his head stiffly.

A one-eyed bear with one ear missing was looking at him with mockery in its eyes.

Almost instinctively, Tian Zhuang drew his knife and tried to charge at the beast.

Too slow. Far too slow.

Those who failed to respect nature would ultimately suffer nature’s retaliation.

The bear moved with astonishing speed and clamped its jaws around Tian Zhuang’s arm.

In an instant, the entire arm was inside the bear’s mouth.

“Mountain Ranger, save me!” Tian Zhuang shouted.

But Chu Feng remained prone in the snow, utterly motionless.

The bear did not seem particularly interested in Tian Zhuang.

It tossed him aside and headed toward the snow shelter.

In no time, the seemingly sturdy shelter was knocked down by the bear.

The injured bandits inside stared at the gigantic creature that had suddenly appeared and began screaming in terror.

The brown bear showed them no mercy. It bit down on them one after another, even seizing Zhao Youtian and tearing him through the air for a moment before splitting him in two.

Before long, every one of them was dead.

The only survivors were Tian Zhuang, who lay there shrieking in agony, and Chu Feng, still prone in the snow.

The brown bear was not hungry.

It simply enjoyed the sensation of killing.

Chu Feng silently watched everything from beneath the snow.

Then the brown bear turned its head and looked toward him.

A hideous smile appeared at the corner of its mouth.

In all his life, Chu Feng had never imagined that he would see such a smile on the face of a bear.

He had been discovered.

He had to run!

But when Chu Feng rose, he did not flee. Instead, he stepped forward, seized Tian Zhuang’s knife, and faced the brown bear head-on.

Because he could not outrun it.

The brown bear paid him no attention. It seemed to be mocking his overconfidence as it walked toward him, one slow step at a time.

Chu Feng felt utterly desperate. Just as he thought he was finished—

“Roar!”

A snow leopard leaped into view and cast the brown bear a provocative glance.

Anger and impatience appeared in the bear’s eyes.

When old enemies met, their hatred burned all the fiercer.

The brown bear abandoned Chu Feng at once and pursued the snow leopard.

Only after a long while, when the bear had disappeared completely, did Chu Feng truly relax.

“Save me… save me…” Tian Zhuang pleaded, clutching his shoulder.

The area had been bitten so savagely by the bear that almost nothing remained.

“Save you? Lord Tian, do you know what kind of person I hate most in this life?”

Seeing Tian Zhuang in such a miserable state, Chu Feng did not save him immediately. Instead, he walked over and asked him this question.

“What are you trying to do? Save me, and I’ll guarantee you wealth and a bright future! If you abandon me, my Tian family will make you pay!” Tian Zhuang snarled.

Even now, he still believed that Chu Feng merely intended to abandon him.

But Chu Feng had harbored murderous intent from the very beginning.

He revealed the exact same hideous smile as the brown bear.

“I told you already. The people I hate most are those who threaten me—especially those who threaten my family!”

He raised the knife and swung it down with all his strength.
