Chapter Fifty-Five: Caught at the Bar

Su Mian heard Wen Kening offer to help investigate the driver but immediately stopped her. "Forget it. You’ve only just managed to have a few peaceful days. Don’t let the Wen family target you again because of me."
The Wen family was despicable and unscrupulous; they would stoop to any depths. She couldn’t allow Wen Kening to take such a risk.
But she didn’t care. "What do I have to fear from them? I have a husband now; I’ve long lost any value to them."
Though she said this, the Wen family was no ordinary foe. If they discovered her marriage was fake, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Gripping Wen Kening’s arm, Su Mian spoke earnestly, "Kening, you must promise me not to act rashly."
Wen Kening nodded solemnly. "Alright, I promise. But you have to be happy too, or I’ll worry about you."
The Huo family had deep roots. If Lin Xiu’s secret were exposed, it would be a true catastrophe for Su Mian.
The two clinked their glasses, and Su Mian shifted the topic. "Kening, how do you feel after getting married? Has your lifestyle changed at all?"
Wen Kening pondered for a moment. Besides having another person at home, everything seemed much the same.
She then awkwardly changed the subject. "Why does a young girl like you keep asking these questions? Are you secretly falling in love and thinking about finding a man to marry?"
She only meant to joke, but the joke was larger than expected.
Su Mian fell silent, her gaze vacant, as if lost in thought.
Worried, Wen Kening asked, "Mian Mian, what’s wrong? Sorry, I was just teasing you."
Su Mian could see that Wen Kening’s married life was quite pleasant. Two strangers marrying suddenly could still get along so harmoniously.
She guessed that someone like Huo Beihan, if he met the right person, would probably marry immediately after a blind date.
Sighing at the thought, Wen Kening grew more concerned. "Mian Mian, are you even listening to me?"
Su Mian snapped back to reality. "Oh, sorry, I was a bit distracted."
Wen Kening sensed something was wrong—surely something had happened with the Huo family, or Su Mian wouldn’t be so uneasy.

Tentatively, Wen Kening asked, "Mian Mian, did Huo Beihan or someone from the Huo family bully you?"
Su Mian took a deep breath. She was indeed entangled with the Huo family now, but it was more a matter of her own sensitive mind.
"I’ll keep my distance from Huo Beihan and the Huo family from now on. Unless necessary, I won’t meet them again."
If she could, she’d include Lin Xiu in that group, but with her mind, that would only invite more trouble.
Not wanting Su Mian to remain so downcast, Wen Kening snatched the beer from her hand. "What’s the point of drinking alone at home? Let me show you how adults unwind."
Dazed, Su Mian followed Wen Kening to a bar. In the dance floor, men and women swayed closely, the dazzling scene offering a rare sense of release.
They let loose in the bar, but upstairs Lin Mu spotted a familiar figure and grabbed Huo Beihan’s arm. "Brother, look over there. Am I seeing things? Why is Su Mian here?"
Shen Tingzhou instinctively followed Huo Beihan’s gaze and saw Su Mian next to her supposed new wife from the fake marriage.
Without a word, he turned to leave, but Lin Mu pulled him back. "Where are you going?"
Shouldn’t Huo Beihan confront her himself at a time like this?
Why was Shen Tingzhou so agitated?
Huo Beihan stepped in to explain, "That woman with Su Mian is connected to him somehow. Don’t say anything."
Lin Mu nodded knowingly and released Shen Tingzhou’s hand.
He hurried away, while Wen Jinbo smirked, certain a spectacle was about to unfold.
At this point, Su Mian was already heavily intoxicated. Wen Kening, still somewhat clear-headed, caught sight of the group upstairs and suddenly sobered up.
She had just seen Shen Tingzhou and Huo Beihan together, but when she blinked again, Shen Tingzhou had vanished.
Patting her chest, Wen Kening muttered, "That scared me. Looks like I shouldn’t drink so much."
She was hallucinating.

Su Mian raised her glass, smiling dreamily at the woman beside her. "Kening, thank you for staying with me today. I’m feeling much better."
Wen Kening saw she was quite drunk and suggested, "Mian Mian, it’s late. We shouldn’t drink more. Let me take you home."
But Su Mian suddenly threw a drunken tantrum. "I’m not going back. Being alone there is worse than staying here. It’s lively here; I won’t feel lonely. If you need to go back to your husband, then go ahead."
Her words made Wen Kening uncomfortable—her husband wasn’t as important to her as Su Mian, her close friend.
Upstairs, Wen Jinbo noticed Huo Beihan’s angry expression and kindly advised, "Su Mian really shouldn’t drink anymore. Maybe you should go talk to her?"
Huo Beihan’s face was dark with fury, a fire burning in his chest. Su Mian had deliberately kept her distance today and lied about feeling unwell.
Yet here she was, lively and rowdy in a bar, showing no sign of illness.
Lin Mu, seeing him frozen, also urged, "Brother, don’t hold back now. If something happens, you’ll regret it."
Recalling last night, Huo Beihan still felt uneasy. When Wen Kening went to the restroom, he approached to stop Su Mian. "Mian Mian, you’re not feeling well. Don’t drink so much. Let me take you home."
Su Mian’s mind was fuzzy. The man before her looked somewhat familiar, but she mumbled, "Who are you? Why do you care about me?"
Even if he was her elder brother, so what? They weren’t related by blood. It was better to keep some distance moving forward.
She could seize the drunken moment to share her thoughts with Huo Beihan.
Unexpectedly, Huo Beihan was hurt by her words but knew better than to argue with a drunk.
He took the bottle from her hand and spoke calmly to soothe her, "You’ve had enough to drink. Let me take you home now."
Before Su Mian, he was always willing to be the one to yield first.
Irritated, Su Mian snapped, "Who are you? I told you not to interfere. Mind your own business."
