He had just come to collect some documents when he saw Su Li hurrying downstairs, looking anxious, so he followed her.

Because of a business trip, the man wasn’t wearing a white coat but a crisp white polyester shirt tucked into black dress pants. Tall and upright, his face was calm and detached, showing no emotion.

“I heard from colleagues that the patient’s injuries are severe. Let me see the examination results.”

His composure was so steady and serene that there was no hint of deceit on his face.

Su Li was momentarily stunned but quickly said, “Brother, this is Dr. Fu. Please give him the examination report.”

Su Mingde hurriedly handed the report to Fu Jinzou. “Dr. Fu, I beg you, please save my father.”

Fu Jinzou said nothing, instead carefully examining the report in his hands.

After a moment, he spoke softly, “The patient has a large brain contusion. The area involves many nerves and blood vessels, making surgery very risky. But without surgery, it’s a death sentence.”

Su Li pushed aside Shao Ting’an’s hand, which was gripping her wrist, and stepped forward. “Fu Jinzou, please save my father. I’m begging you. You’re the best surgeon in the hospital; you must have a way.”

Only then did Fu Jinzou dare to look at Su Li. Her eyes were red, tears still clinging to her eyelashes.

He had never seen this side of Su Li before; his mind was filled with her usual smiling face.

“Jinzou, long time no see.”

Shao Ting’an approached and greeted him.

Fu Jinzou suppressed his emotions, glanced at him briefly, nodded slightly with a calm expression, then turned to Su Mingde. “Please tell the nurse to prepare for surgery immediately.”

Su Li tearfully expressed her gratitude, her voice trembling, “Thank you!”

Fu Jinzou glanced at her once more, holding back some emotion, pressed his lips together, and left, ignoring Shao Ting’an’s attempt to speak.

Half an hour later, Su Danian was wheeled into the operating room.

As Fu Jinzou was about to enter the operating room, Su Li grabbed his sleeve, pleading, “Fu Jinzou…”

He turned to look at her, a faint twitch at the corner of his mouth, and quietly said, “Don’t worry.”

Shao Ting’an clenched his fist tighter as he watched Fu Jinzou enter.

Liu Guilan sat quietly nearby. Since Su Danian’s accident, she hadn’t spoken a word. Now, watching her husband enter surgery, her gaze remained fixed on the door.

Su Li sat beside her, suddenly realizing she had been so anxious about her father that she had forgotten her mother needed comfort the most.

“Mom, everything will be fine. Dad is a kind man; good things happen to good people.”

Su Li held her mother’s hand tightly, speaking not only to comfort her mother but to reassure herself.

Liu Guilan whispered, “I believe in your father, but if he can’t hold on, I will protect our family well.”

Wen Yu leaned on her mother-in-law, tears in her eyes. “Mom, Dad will definitely be okay.”

Su Mingde noticed Shao Ting’an leaning against the wall silently and felt somewhat moved.

“Ting’an, come sit with us for a while. We don’t even know when this surgery will end.”

“Brother, I’m not tired.”

Shao Ting’an’s gentle face carried a trace of worry. Su Li felt a pang of softness—if only Shao Ting’an hadn’t been unfaithful.

Three and a half hours later, the operating room door opened.

Fu Jinzou came out, removing his mask and cap, his face weary.

Su Li and Su Mingde rushed forward. “Dr. Fu, how is my father?”

Fu Jinzou looked at Su Mingde, then at Su Li, nodding. “The surgery was very successful.”

Su Li’s tense expression relaxed somewhat. “Thank you!”

“Although the surgery was successful and your father is out of immediate danger, the brain nerves were damaged. If he wakes within twenty-four hours, the prognosis isn’t too bad.”

Su Mingde looked puzzled. “Dr. Fu, what do you mean? Wasn’t the surgery successful?”

“Successful means the brain contusion was thoroughly cleared, but the impact caused irreversible nerve damage. Whether he wakes depends on fate.”

Fu Jinzou said this looking deeply at Su Li. Regardless of whether she could accept it, he had to be honest.

“What happens if he doesn’t wake?”

Su Li’s relief suddenly tightened again.

“If he doesn’t wake, he will remain in a coma—what medicine calls a vegetative state.”

Hearing this news, Su Li felt as if struck by lightning, nearly losing her balance.

Fu Jinzou was quick to react, grabbing her arm.

Shao Ting’an belatedly steadied Su Li. “Honey, Dr. Fu said it’s just a possibility. Maybe Dad will wake up after some rest.”

Fu Jinzou was not good at comforting, especially under these circumstances. He had almost concluded that Su Danian would not wake anytime soon.

Su Danian’s thalamus was injured—a crucial brain connection point. The assailant intended for him to die.

“I think you should report this to the police immediately. Whoever attacked your father never intended for him to live.”

“Professor, I’ve arranged lunch in your office. After eating, you’ll need to hurry; Professor Anderson is here for a rare visit.”

Song Guoping noticed Su Li’s eyes suddenly widen. “This is…”

Fu Jinzou shot him a glance. “Whatever it is, get ready quickly. I’m on my way.”

“Jinzou, sorry to take your time. We’ll come to thank you properly another day,” Shao Ting’an said with a grateful smile, gently squeezing Su Li’s hand.

Su Mingde stepped forward to shake Fu Jinzou’s hand. “Yes, yes. Ting’an is right. We’ll definitely come thank you properly.”

Su Li sniffled, steadying her emotions, and said to Fu Jinzou, “Thank you!”

Fu Jinzou nodded and reminded them as he left, “Report to the police quickly.”

Su Mingde gratefully walked a few steps with him, nodding. “I’ll go after Dad is back in the ward.”

Shao Ting’an felt awkward at Fu Jinzou’s coldness toward him but still followed Su Mingde.

“Jinzou, take care.”

Every time Shao Baoguo saw him, he reminded him to cultivate a relationship with Fu Jinzou: first, because they were classmates; second, because Shao Tingting liked Fu Jinzou; and third, because the Shao family wanted to connect with the Fu family.

Fu Jinzou’s father held a position in the Pingjiang Municipal Committee, while Shao Baoguo was just a minor bureau chief eager for influence.

Not long after Fu Jinzou left, nurses wheeled Su Danian out of the operating room.

Liu Guilan, who had been holding her emotions tightly, finally broke down, clutching her husband’s hand and sobbing uncontrollably.

“Old Su…”

“Mom, Dad will wake up,” Wen Yu comforted her mother-in-law as they walked together.

Su Li looked at her father, his head wrapped in thick bandages, her heart aching as if torn apart.

That optimistic, cheerful father who used to squat by the door smoking his pipe, who smiled broadly at her and secretly slipped her money, now lay silently.

Suppressing the sting in her eyes, Su Li grasped her father’s hand firmly and resolutely said, “Dad will definitely wake up.”

Back in the ward, the first thing Su Li said was for Su Mingde to report the crime to the police.

“Brother, we can’t let those who hurt Dad get away easily. Go file the report quickly.”
