Facing the little girl’s admiring gaze, Zhao Yue found it hard to refuse:
“Then I’ll just say a few words. The country is currently placing great emphasis on naval development. But there’s not much I can reveal. We’re about to have new warships very soon...”
As he spoke of the warships, his eyes sparkled with excitement, his words growing more animated with each sentence. In his past life, he had never spoken so much—only when she was working did he watch quietly from a distance.
Whenever their eyes met, he would turn his wheelchair and retreat indoors.
Zhao Yue felt proud seeing the girl’s admiring look before him.
After a brief silence, he spoke, “Xiao Wang was the comrade who died in the battle I mentioned earlier. He was very brave, holding onto the thug until he bled out. When we arrived, we were all deeply moved.”
Su Jinxia heard how the comrade had made the ultimate sacrifice and felt profound respect for such a person. “My condolences. He contributed to the country, and the people will never forget him.”
“Comrade Su, you’re right. Being a soldier is about serving the country—otherwise, why be a soldier!” Zhao Yue realized his emotions were rising again and quickly cleared his throat.
Su Jinxia asked, “So your business here will be done today, and you’ll return to the island tomorrow?”
“That’s right!” Zhao Yue replied.
“May I accompany you? I’m going to find my grandfather. He works as a shipworker there and hasn’t been heard from for months.”
Since they happened to meet, traveling together wouldn’t be bad. Maybe she could find a way to stop him from going to sea, preventing a tragedy.
Zhao Yue looked at the fragile girl before him and thought it hard to imagine her reaching the island safely without his company.
“Of course. My bus leaves at 9 a.m. tomorrow.”
Su Jinxia said joyfully, “Then it’s settled. Wait for me.”
Zhao Yue nodded repeatedly. If his usual comrades saw this, they would be shocked. Even a man usually calm and composed could have moments of weakness.
Liu Hui pushed the door open and glanced around, thinking they’d been given enough time.
Seeing Liu Hui return, Su Jinxia said, “Aunt Liu, I’ll head back now. I’ll come visit when I have time.”
Liu Hui saw her to the door. “Ling Ling misses you a lot. Come by to play when you’re free.”
“Okay, Aunt Liu. I’ll remember.” Su Jinxia replied politely and left.
Today was lucky; she smoothly obtained the introduction letter and even met Zhao Yue. It seemed fate was on her side.
Liu Hui turned back inside. “Don’t say I didn’t give you a chance. That girl has no boyfriend. If you like, I can help set you up.”

Zhao Yue picked up his cap from the table. “Director Liu, I have some things to attend to. I’ll head off first.”
Liu Hui watched his hurried retreat. As someone experienced, she understood everything.
To be honest, if he weren’t such a good catch, she wouldn’t even want to play matchmaker!
Su Jinxia watched the busy street outside, wondering what to do next.
At that moment, she spotted a familiar figure down the street.
It was Song Jianping, the abusive man. He was pulling a woman along the street, clearly trying to drag her into a dead-end alley.
She hurried over.
Song Jianping gripped Lin Yuanyuan’s arm, dragging her desperately toward the alley. “Come with me. I want to talk to you alone. Why don’t you like me? What’s wrong with me?”
“I’m about to become a proper fertilizer factory worker, earning over ten yuan a month. It’s hard to find such conditions even with a lantern! Why won’t you marry me?”
Lin Yuanyuan saw herself getting farther from the crowd. Just as she was about to cry out for help, the man clamped his hand over her mouth. Her eyes widened helplessly as she looked ahead.
She knew this was a dead-end alley, leading to a dilapidated area with abandoned houses. There were few people around and no residents nearby. Suddenly, she saw a young woman rushing toward them.
Hope surged within her.
Song Jianping, nearing the corner, was about to succeed. Once he forced this woman, no one could stop her from marrying him.
“Lin Yuanyuan, once you’re mine, don’t even think about escaping. Unless you die!”
He said arrogantly, pulling harder to drag her forward. Suddenly, he found himself unable to move her and looked back.
Beside Lin Yuanyuan stood a young woman, fair and delicate. Upon closer thought, he recognized her.
“You’re Su Family’s eldest daughter!”
“That’s right!” Su Jinxia admitted confidently.
In her past life, this man had slammed her to the ground and beaten her mercilessly. That suffocating feeling—the helplessness—was something only those who experienced it could understand.
But now things were different. She had to control her anger and not kill him outright.
Song Jianping sneered at Su Jinxia. “What? You want to meddle? Want to see what happens if I take you both down?”
He utterly dismissed her, seeing only a frail woman.

Su Jinxia gave him no chance to talk back. She stepped forward and grabbed his arm. When he released the woman, she executed a perfect shoulder throw, slamming him to the ground.
Song Jianping lay stunned, his mind blank—not even aware of how he had been thrown down.
The pain in his back brought him back to reality. Looking up at Su Jinxia standing over him, he snarled,
“You filthy woman! Just wait, I’ll kill you today!”
He already imagined how he would beat her to death.
Having fought since childhood, no one in the city dared to cross him. He was a reckless brawler—could he really be taken down by a woman?
With that thought, he pushed himself up.
Su Jinxia kicked him down again and glanced around. “You picked a great spot. You could scream your lungs out and no one would come to save you!”
Song Jianping clutched his chest. That kick nearly took his breath away. He finally realized the woman’s strength was formidable; her frail appearance was deceiving.
“Su Jinxia! I won’t let you off!”
“Fine, fine. I’ve got that written down. I’m not letting you off either today.” Su Jinxia rolled up her sleeves and stepped forward. Seeing a brick on the ground, she picked it up casually.
Maybe it was time to smash that skull.
Song Jianping’s eyes widened as he pointed at the brick. “What are you going to do with that?”
“What do you think?” Su Jinxia smirked coldly. “To deal with scum like you, violence is the only language you understand. Wonder if you can handle a brick to the head?”
“You’re crazy!” Song Jianping broke out in cold sweat, regretting coming to such a secluded place.
Indeed, even if he screamed, no one would come to save him!
Lin Yuanyuan quickly recovered and ran over. “Miss, calm down. Don’t do something foolish for me! He hasn’t hurt me, and if you hit him with that brick, it could be fatal!”
Su Jinxia looked at the woman before her. Seeing the photographs from her past life, she recalled this was Lin Yuanyuan—the first wife of Song Jianping. She hadn’t died a natural death, but had poisoned herself.
After her death, Lin Yuanyuan’s parents also passed away. Song Jianping shamelessly seized their house and caused the family line to end!
