Sweet Redemption from Breaking the Cocoon
Since returning from the seaside, although the shadows in Yan Xiaonian’s heart had begun to dissipate, the scar remained, aching faintly from time to time. Xiao Sheng saw this, and his heart ached for her. He realized more than ever that the healing of this wound would not be a matter of a single day; it required his persistent love and patience to slowly soften and soothe it.
One afternoon, with the sun shining warmly as usual, Xiao Sheng sat with Yan Xiaonian on the garden wicker chairs. A gentle breeze carried the rich fragrance of flowers, but Yan Xiaonian’s gaze was distant, as if she were immersed in an ocean of her own thoughts. Xiao Sheng gently took her hand and whispered, "Xiaonian, I know a place that might help you find some of the happiness you once knew. Shall we go and see it?" Yan Xiaonian looked up, a trace of confusion in her eyes, but she nodded in agreement.
Xiao Sheng brought Yan Xiaonian to a quiet cabin in the mountains. The cottage was hidden among the green shadows of the hills, surrounded by lush trees. A clear, bubbling stream flowed nearby, its water splashing against the rocks to create crisp, melodic sounds, like a beautiful symphony played by nature. In front of the house lay a wide meadow where wildflowers of every hue bloomed wantonly, covering the earth like a brilliant tapestry.
"This is a paradise I discovered by chance. Whenever I feel restless, I come here to find peace," Xiao Sheng explained with a smile, his eyes full of anticipation, hoping this tranquility would touch Yan Xiaonian.
They stepped inside. The cabin was simple and cozy, the natural wood furniture emitting a faint, clean scent. Hanging on the walls were sketches Xiao Sheng had drawn himself, capturing beautiful moments from his memories with Yan Xiaonian: her gentle smile among the flowers, or their backs as they walked hand-in-hand down the street. Yan Xiaonian walked slowly, studying each one. Those dusty, warm memories flooded back like a tide, and her eyes grew moist.
During their days in the cabin, Xiao Sheng accompanied Yan Xiaonian to watch the morning mist swirl through the mountains, as if in a fairyland. At midday, they would roll up their pant legs and step into the cool stream, laughing and playing as they tried to catch nimble little fish and shrimp, splashing each other until their clothes were soaked, yet laughing heartily all the while. In the evenings, they would spread a picnic blanket on the grass, set out carefully prepared snacks and fruit, and watch the sunset stretch their shadows long, enjoying the quiet intimacy of the moment.
However, the calm of life is always prone to disruption. One day, while Xiao Sheng was in the kitchen preparing dinner, his phone rang urgently. There was an emergency at the company that required his immediate presence. Looking at Yan Xiaonian outside, who was playing with a small rabbit, Xiao Sheng felt a wave of reluctance and guilt. After much hesitation, he went to her and said softly, "Xiaonian, there is a small emergency at the company. I need to go back for a moment, but I will be back soon." Yan Xiaonian’s smile froze, and a look of loneliness flickered in her eyes, though she only murmured a soft, "Okay."
Xiao Sheng rushed back to the company, and by the time he finished dealing with the complex affairs, it was already late at night. Ignoring his exhaustion, he drove back to the mountain cabin as fast as he could, his mind filled with the image of Yan Xiaonian’s lonely expression. When he pushed open the door, the cabin was pitch black, save for the cold light of the moon filtering through the window. Xiao Sheng’s heart sank. He called out softly, "Xiaonian, I’m back." There was no response.
He searched the house in a panic until he finally found Yan Xiaonian curled into a ball in the corner of the bedroom. Her eyes were tightly shut, and tear tracks stained her cheeks. Xiao Sheng’s heart broke. He rushed over, crouched beside her, and pulled her into his arms. "Xiaonian, I’m sorry. It’s my fault for leaving you alone and making you afraid." Yan Xiaonian trembled in his embrace, sobbing, "I thought… you had left me behind again, just like before…" Xiao Sheng was filled with regret. He held her tightly, vowing never to let her feel such fear again.
After this incident, Xiao Sheng realized that mere companionship was not enough to fill the voids of the past; he needed to completely rebuild Yan Xiaonian’s trust in him. After returning to the Xiao residence, the first thing he did was delegate some of the company’s critical decision-making power, ensuring that even in the event of an emergency, he would never have to be away from her for long. He also worked with Yan Xiaonian to create a life plan, incorporating their individual preferences and dreams, so she could truly feel that he would be by her side for every day to come.
As time passed, the emptiness in Yan Xiaonian’s eyes was gradually replaced by a radiant light, and smiles appeared on her face more and more frequently. One day, under the bright sun, Yan Xiaonian took the initiative to hold Xiao Sheng’s hand. "Let’s go for a walk in the garden," she said softly, "just like in the past." Xiao Sheng felt a stir in his heart; he squeezed her hand and replied, "Yes, and for every 'past' to come, we will walk through it together."
They strolled through the garden, where the flowers were vibrant and the birds sang melodically. It seemed as though all their past suffering had transformed into nourishment for their happiness, making this love, having weathered the storm, even more resilient and brilliant—slowly unfolding toward the future.
