Volume One, Chapter 11: Is His Family About to Welcome a New Member?
The obstetrics and gynecology department was bustling, with medical staff and patients coming and going, the sound of the call machine echoing intermittently.
Shen Yan found an empty seat and sat down, pulling Xiao Tian to sit beside him. Xiao Tian seemed to have a fondness for red and was dressed in a red dress today as well.
Lin Yuxia stood hesitantly at the stairwell, unsure whether she should go over and greet them.
Xiao Tian spotted her first and called out, “Sister Yuxia!”
Shen Yan lifted his eyes and met Lin Yuxia’s gaze; his previously easygoing expression immediately turned serious.
He walked over to her and asked, “What are you doing here? Are you feeling unwell?”
Lin Yuxia explained, “I just came from the inpatient department visiting someone involved.”
Shen Yan visibly relaxed. For a moment there, he had mistakenly thought Lin Yuxia was also pregnant, which had terrified him to the core.
Lin Yuxia asked, “Brother, how come you’re—”
Shen Yan pointed behind him. “I’m here accompanying Xiao Tian for a checkup.”
“She—?” Lin Yuxia hesitated.
Shen Yan nodded.
Lin Yuxia forced a bitter smile.
Should she be happy? Hearing that her brother’s girlfriend was expecting a child...
But she truly couldn’t feel happy. Instead, it felt suffocating, as if someone was strangling her, making it hard to breathe, her blood seeming to congeal.
Her hands hidden behind her back, she nervously twisted her fingers over and over before finally managing to say, “So... does that mean I’ll soon have a little nephew?”
Shen Yan gave a faint smile, and Lin Yuxia couldn’t tell if it was pride or helplessness.
“Probably.”
“In that case... congratulations in advance, brother.”
Suddenly, the abrupt ringing of a phone cut off their conversation. Shen Yan glanced at the caller ID—it was a call from the company.
“I’ll take this somewhere quiet.”
With long strides, Shen Yan headed toward the stairwell. Lin Yuxia stood there in a daze, staring after him, as if trying to digest the bittersweet news.
She had long known there was someone else in Shen Yan’s life.
She had tried to accept that he only saw her as a sister.
But time and again, seeing Shen Yan show affection for someone else in front of her inflicted a dull, gnawing pain, like a blunt knife cutting into flesh.
A soft voice called her name: “Lin Yuxia.”
She turned around to see Xiao Tian standing behind her.
Unlike before, Xiao Tian’s face didn’t wear her usual sweet smile but instead twisted into a half-smirk.
“Lin Yuxia, you like Shen Yan, don’t you?”
The question was so sudden that Lin Yuxia panicked inexplicably.
She looked at Xiao Tian in shock, her dark pupils trembling slightly. “No...”
She thought she had hidden it well, so how could anyone see through her feelings?
“Shen Yan isn’t here, and there’s no one familiar around. You don’t have to pretend to be an innocent little white rabbit in front of me.”
“Lin Yuxia, I’ve seen people like you before. All this ‘brother and sister’ act is just a facade. In your mind, you’re always scheming, looking for the right chance to get into a man’s bed.”
Lin Yuxia frowned slightly. Though she had sensed from their first meeting that Xiao Tian was not a good person, she hadn’t expected her to be so ruthless.
Perhaps feeling confident with the child she carried, Xiao Tian had completely let herself go:
“Lin Yuxia, you chose a bad time to return to the country, because you’ve met your match in me. I won’t be as easy to get rid of as Shen Yan’s previous women. I’m going to become Mrs. Shen.”
She paused, then grinned broadly, revealing red lips. “Sister Yuxia, you might soon be calling me sister-in-law.”
Lin Yuxia didn’t want to argue with Xiao Tian, nor did she want to put Shen Yan in an awkward position.
She simply said two words: “Congratulations.” Then turned and walked away.
Xiao Tian felt as if she had punched cotton—powerless and frustrated, she glared at Lin Yuxia’s retreating figure.
After finishing the call, Shen Yan returned but didn’t see Lin Yuxia, so he asked Xiao Tian, “Where’s my sister?”
Xiao Tian put on an innocent face. “Sister Yuxia said she had something to do and left early.”
Feeling awful, Lin Yuxia didn’t want to go home. She returned to the law firm in a daze.
The young receptionist was just about to leave for the day and cheerfully greeted her, “Lawyer Lin, working late again?”
Lin Yuxia ignored her, drifting past like a restless ghost.
Noticing something was off, the receptionist hurried after her, asking, “Lawyer Lin, are you alright? Do you feel unwell?”
Only then did Lin Yuxia focus her blurred gaze on her, forcing a pale smile.
“I’m fine.”
The receptionist handed her a cup of warm water.
“Is it that time of the month? I made you some brown sugar water.”
Lin Yuxia felt a warmth in her heart. Her scattered eyes finally focused. “Thank you.”
She sipped the warm brown sugar water and gradually regained her composure.
She told herself that no matter who Shen Yan was with, he was still her brother. Let that Tian woman show off all she wanted.
After finishing the drink, she busied herself at her desk for a few more hours. When she finally closed her laptop, she found the entire office empty.
She took a bus home.
As soon as she stepped inside, Lin Yuxia sensed something was amiss.
There was no Lin Hanhan curled up with a tablet watching dramas in the living room, no Jiang Lan wearing a face mask watching TV; the kitchen was empty, no servant brewing bird’s nest porridge; no lights were on upstairs in the bedrooms.
“Dad?” she called out toward the study, but there was no answer.
“Aunt Jiang?” Still silence.
The vast villa was eerily quiet; not only was the family absent, but half of the housekeepers and servants were gone as well.
Lin Yuxia walked down the long corridor to the backyard and finally caught a servant, quickly asking,
“Where has everyone gone?”
The servant was startled by her sudden question, then said in surprise, “Miss, don’t you know?”
Lin Yuxia was even more puzzled.I'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
