Chapter 43: The Challenge of the Initial Predicament
In the dim underground space, the flickering firelight cast dancing shadows on everyone's faces, instantly replacing the celebratory atmosphere with heavy tension.
Wu Xia's sharp warning alarms were still echoing in their ears, and everyone's nerves were stretched to the absolute limit.
Chu Feng's gaze swept across the group, and he said in a deep voice, "Liu Yong, check the defense systems! Sun Yue, scout the surrounding area! Everyone else, prepare for battle!"
At the command, the team members sprang into action.
Liu Yong sprinted to the console, his fingers flying rapidly across the keyboard as lines of code cascaded down the screen.
Sun Yue vanished into the shadows like a nimble cat without making a sound.
Chen Qiang stood at the vanguard of the formation, his towering physique acting like an iron wall, the shield in his hand gleaming with a metallic luster.
Pan Yue and Wu Xia took charge of logistics and support, skillfully organizing supplies and distributing crucial items to the team members.
Standing at the center of the formation, Chu Feng furrowed his brow, his eyes burning like torches.
He weighed the pros and cons in his mind: should they hold their ground and wait for reinforcements, or should they seize the initiative and launch a preemptive strike?
Hunkering down to wait for help would minimize casualties to the greatest extent possible, but it also meant surrendering the initiative entirely to the enemy.
Attacking preemptively might catch the adversary off guard, but it carried enormous risks as well; should they fall into an ambush, the consequences would be unimaginable.
Time ticked away second by second, and the suffocating tension in the air grew ever thicker.
Suddenly, Liu Yong jerked his head up, his face drained of all color. "Captain, the defense system is under attack!"
Almost simultaneously, Sun Yue's voice came through the communicator: "Enemy sighted! Number unknown, approaching rapidly!"
Chu Feng took a deep breath, a flash of determination cutting through his eyes. "Everyone, prepare for combat!"
"Boom!" A deafening roar shook the entrance of the underground space.
Flying debris and swirling dust filled the air.
"Here they come!" Chen Qiang roared, thrusting his heavy shield forward.
"Wait..." Chu Feng called out abruptly, his eyes locked onto the entrance as an ominous premonition surged within him.
Before the rubble and smoke could settle, several shadowy figures darted through the entrance like phantoms.
Their movements were bizarre and erratic, fluttering about like spirits wandering through the dark.
The weapons in their hands gleamed with an eerie blue light, carrying a bone-chilling frost with every sweep.
"Watch out, their attacks are corrosive!" Chen Qiang bellowed as several pitted corrosion marks instantly appeared across his shield.
He swung the shield with all his might, attempting to block the rain of incoming attacks, yet he still found himself struggling to keep up.
The team fell into a fierce battle. The onslaught rolled in like wave after wave of a relentless tide, leaving virtually no room to breathe.
Although the defense system operated by Liu Yong barely managed to function, it looked stretched to its absolute limits when facing the enemy's bizarre and unpredictable offensive methods.
Pan Yue and Wu Xia rushed to bandage the wounds of injured teammates, filling the air with a pungent scent of blood.
Sun Yue leaped continuously through the gaps in the enemy's assault, trying to pinpoint a weakness, only to discover that these shadowy silhouettes seemed to lack physical forms, rendering any direct strikes incapable of hitting vital targets.
Chu Feng stared intently at the battlefield. The shadow curse patterns on his arms surged frantically, imbuing every strike he made with tremendous power, yet it was only enough to barely beat back the encroaching foes.
He felt an unprecedented wave of pressure; these enemies seemed far more troublesome than any opponent they had encountered before.
"Captain, I've found something!" Sun Yue's voice suddenly rang through the communicator, tinged with a hint of excitement. "Every time they attack, the landing point is linked to where they appeared previously! There's a pattern!"
A spark ignited in Chu Feng's mind, and he immediately urged Sun Yue to keep observing.
After a few more rounds of engagement, Sun Yue's voice came through once more: "I'm certain of it! Their attacks use their previous strike locations as centers to spread outward in a ripple effect!"
Chu Feng immediately relayed this pattern to the rest of the team.
Instantly adjusting their tactics, the members stopped blind attacks and instead utilized the terrain and the enemy's offensive rhythm to deftly evade and counterstrike.
"Concentrate your attacks on a single point!" Chu Feng roared, throwing a punch toward a looming shadow.
The force of the shadows swept outward like a violent gale, forcing the shadow back.
The other members followed suit instantly, converging all their firepower on that exact spot.
"Boom!" A violent explosion rang out, and the shadow at that targeted location instantly shattered, dissolving into wisps of black smoke that vanished into the air.
"Their attacks actually stopped working!" Chen Qiang shouted in excitement.
"Just what in the world... are these guys?" Chu Feng murmured in a low voice, watching the stunned shadows.
The battle paused temporarily, but the team members could not afford the slightest relaxation.
Pan Yue hurried over to Chu Feng's side, carefully applying medicine to his wounds.
"Are you alright..." Pan Yue asked softly, a trace of worry lingering in her tone.
Looking into Pan Yue's caring eyes, Chu Feng froze momentarily. He wanted to say something, but found his throat clogged as if blocked, unable to utter a single syllable...
Pan Yue's soft fingers gently brushed against Chu Feng's cheek, wiping away the bloodstains near his wound.
Her gaze was as tender as water, reflecting the flickering firelight and capturing Chu Feng's slightly exhausted silhouette.
Feeling the warmth of her fingertips, a warm current surged from the bottom of Chu Feng's heart, driving away the chill left by the battle.
He gazed intently at Pan Yue, wishing to speak, yet uncertain where to begin.
Sensing his thoughts, Pan Yue smiled gently and said, "Don't worry, we'll all be fine." Her smile was like a ray of winter sunshine, warm and radiant.
Right at that moment, Liu Yong crept out stealthily from a pile of discarded materials, holding a bizarre-looking device in his hands.
The contraption had been pieced together from various metal parts and electronic components, radiating a peculiar glow and looking thoroughly formidable.
"Captain, look what I made!" he grinned mysteriously, placing the device at the most prominent spot within the underground space.
Chu Feng and Pan Yue exchanged glances, each reading a hint of skepticism in the other's eyes.
Could this trinket possibly be of any use?
Sure enough, before long, the shadowy figures shifted their offensive focus entirely toward the device.
Treating the contraption as the adventuring party's secret weapon, they attacked it like madmen, pouring down blue energy beams like a rainstorm.
However, the device was nothing more than a bluffing contraption pieced together by Liu Yong from scrap materials, completely devoid of any offensive capability.
The shadows' assault continued for a full fifteen minutes, yet the device remained completely intact.
Hiding to the side and watching the shadows waste their efforts in vain, Liu Yong could not help breaking into a chuckle.
"This kid actually has a few tricks up his sleeve," Chu Feng muttered, the corners of his mouth curving upward as he looked at Liu Yong's "masterpiece."
Suddenly, a thunderous crash erupted from the far end of the underground space, causing the ground to violently tremble.
Everyone's expression shifted as an even more oppressive force bore down upon them.
"Not good! It looks like they're trying to..." Chen Qiang shouted, but before he could finish his sentence, the ground split open with a massive fissure...
Smoke filled the air, carrying a pungent blend of blood and scorching heat.
The members of the adventuring party huddled in a circle, their backs pressed against the cold rock wall as they scanned their surroundings with utmost vigilance.
The fierce clash had left every single one of them injured and utterly exhausted, yet their eyes burned not with fear, but with a blazing, unyielding fighting spirit.
"What on earth are these things?" Chen Qiang muttered in a low voice, wiping the grime and blood from his face.
"Regardless of their origins, we cannot lower our guard," Chu Feng's gaze was sharp as a blade. "This assault was merely a probe; the real challenge still lies ahead."
Sun Yue picked up a black fragment from the floor, examining it closely. "These shards seem to harbor some sort of special energy..."
"Never mind that for now," Pan Yue interrupted, "we need to find a safe place to rest, recover our strength, and replenish our supplies."
The group scanned their surroundings. Although this underground space was temporarily safe, it lacked resources, and they could be attacked again at any moment.
They needed to find a safer and more reliable hiding spot as soon as possible.
"I know a place," Wu Xia spoke up abruptly. "Not far from here, there's an abandoned fallout shelter that should still have some supplies left inside."
"A shelter?" Chu Feng frowned. "Is it safe?"
"I can't guarantee absolute safety," Wu Xia shrugged, "but it's a lot better than staying here."
After a moment of contemplation, Chu Feng nodded. "Alright, let's head to the shelter."
Packing up what remained, the group followed Wu Xia out of the underground space.
Along the way, they maintained a high level of vigilance, carefully sidestepping potential dangers.
The abandoned shelter sat on the edge of the city amidst a desolate expanse of ruins.
Its gates were long since rusted over, and the walls were fractured and covered in cracks, making the structure look precarious and on the verge of collapse.
"Is this place really safe?" Pan Yue eyed the dilapidated shelter with lingering doubt.
"Don't worry," Wu Xia pushed the heavy door open, "it's much safer than you think."
Stepping inside, the group found the interior to be somewhat better preserved than the exterior suggested.
Though antiquated, the facilities were largely intact, and a portion of the stored provisions remained.
"Fantastic, there's food and water here!" Liu Yong cheered excitedly.
Just as everyone prepared to take a well-deserved rest, Chu Feng suddenly noticed a series of strange symbols carved into the shelter's wall.
These symbols looked vaguely familiar, though he could not recall where he might have seen them before.
"What are these?" Chu Feng pointed at the markings on the wall.
The others gathered around, observing the symbols closely.
"These... look like curse patterns..." Sun Yue said hesitatingly.
"Curse patterns?" A shock rippled through Chu Feng's heart as an ominous premonition washed over him.
"Wait," Liu Yong pointed toward a corner. "Look over there..."
Following the direction of his finger, the group saw a pile of crates stacked in the corner.
A thick layer of dust blanketed the containers, obscuring their contents.
Stepping forward, Chu Feng carefully pried open one of the crates.
Inside lay an array of weapons and equipment.
These arms and gear were identical to the ones wielded by the shadow entities they had just fought...
"This..." Chu Feng gasped, a chill shooting straight from the soles of his feet up to his scalp.
"It seems... we've stumbled into a place we shouldn't have," Wu Xia's voice dropped low and raspy.
"Shh..." Sun Yue suddenly raised a hand in a gesture for silence. "I think I heard something..."
Holding their breath, the group strained their ears.
A faint sound of footsteps drifted over from the depths of the shelter...
"Who's there?!" Chen Qiang barked harshly, drawing his weapon.
"We were... only passing through..." a trembling voice answered from the darkness...
