Chapter 28: Secret Clues in the Library
Before Officer Fang could finish his words, a chill swept over the group. As they looked around, the oppressive atmosphere of the library intensified. With twilight deepening and the scent of decay growing pungent, a heavy stone seemed to press upon their chests, igniting an immediate sense of unease.
The library’s towering gray walls appeared particularly grim in the dusk, like a silent behemoth crouching in a corner of the ruined city. The air was thick with the scent of long-forgotten eras and decaying books—a stifling smell that settled heavily in their lungs. Shattered windows stood like black holes, wailing in the night breeze as if whispering of the tragedies that had once unfolded here.
Chu Feng led the group, sensing a subtle, stifling pressure in the air—the feeling of being watched by a predator—which sent a shiver down his spine. Pan Yue followed closely behind, dagger in hand, her clear eyes scanning the surroundings with vigilance, as if trying to pierce through every secret hidden in the darkness. Liu Yong walked silently in the center of the formation; the indicator lights on his mechanical arm pulsed with a cold blue glow, and his scanner emitted a faint hum, signaling his alertness to the environment. Sun Yue moved with fluid agility, like a wary cat, occasionally glancing back to check for movement. Chen Qiang held his shield tightly, acting as a sturdy rampart to protect the team. Wu Xia stayed close to Officer Fang, her tablet displaying a rough map of the library.
Officer Fang reached the entrance and brushed the dust from the door, revealing a half-open wooden gate. Though carved with exquisite patterns, the wood was now mottled and weathered by time. He pushed it open gently, and the door let out a long, creaking sigh—a sound that rang out with piercing sharpness in the silent air.
Chu Feng peered into the depths of the library. Everywhere he looked, towering bookshelves reached toward the ceiling, stacked with thick volumes like rows of sleeping monoliths. The shadows weaving between the shelves resembled beasts lurking in the dark, their maws agape, waiting for the intruders. The sheer scale of the library left him uneasy. Could they truly find the clues they needed in such a vast space? He took a deep breath, dispelling the stray thoughts from his mind. His gaze turned resolute; since they had already stepped inside, there was no turning back.
"Let's move in," Chu Feng said in a low voice, taking the first step. The team followed, their footsteps echoing clearly through the silent library like war drums beating against an ancient structure, signaling the start of an unknown adventure.
Just as everyone entered and Officer Fang was about to close the door, he felt something beneath his foot and heard a faint *crack*. He looked down to see a thin fissure spreading across the floor, and a sense of foreboding washed over him.
"Look out!" Before he could finish his warning, the surroundings seemed to shift in an instant.
Cracks raced across the floor like a spiderweb. Then, a teeth-gritting grinding sound erupted as the surrounding shelves began to shake violently, threatening to topple.
"Watch out!" Officer Fang shouted. Before they could react, thousands of books poured from the shelves like a torrential downpour, flying toward the group with lethal momentum. The library instantly transformed into a deadly trap; fluttering pages turned into thousands of sharp butterflies, tracing arcs of death through the air.
Chu Feng quickly drew the long blade from his back. The shadow runes etched upon it flickered with a dark light, and he danced the blade through the air, striking down the flying books one by one.
"Be careful! These books are imbued with runic magic!" Chu Feng’s voice was faint amidst the whistling pages, but his firm tone offered a glimmer of hope.
Feng Yao’s hands emitted a soft green glow as the power of a healing rune flowed from her fingertips. She quickly treated Sun Yue, who had been grazed by a page; his wounds healed at a speed visible to the naked eye. Sun Yue gave her a grateful look before nimbly dodging the flying debris, moving with the agility of a monkey between the shelves.
Chen Qiang roared, his muscles tensing as his heavy shield glowed with an earthy yellow light. He held the shield high, bearing the brunt of the onslaught. The books slammed into his barrier with dull thuds, yet he stood as immovable as a rock.
"Get behind me!" Chen Qiang’s voice boomed through the library. He acted as a fortress, building a wall of safety for his teammates with his own body. Liu Yong’s mechanical arm spun rapidly, venting high-pressure air to deflect the incoming books. He calmly analyzed the situation, searching for the mechanism’s weak point.
Wu Xia stayed glued to Officer Fang, her tablet map flickering as she searched for a safe escape route. Pan Yue watched Chu Feng as he darted through the rain of books, clutching his sleeve tightly, her heart in her throat. Chu Feng felt the tug, turned back, and gave her a slight smile.
At that very moment, the floor in the center of the library collapsed, revealing a pitch-black pit.
"Jump!" Chu Feng commanded. Making a split-second decision, he grabbed Pan Yue’s hand and leaped into the hole. The others followed suit, jumping into the unknown darkness.
The sensation of falling vanished in an instant, and they landed steadily on a dry stone platform. In the dim light, they realized they were in a massive underground chamber. The walls were covered in strange, glowing runes that illuminated the mysterious space. The air carried an ancient, mystical aura, as if they had traveled through time to a primordial age.
"Where... where are we?" Wu Xia’s voice trembled as she gripped Officer Fang’s arm.
Officer Fang shook his head, indicating he had never seen such a place.
"It seems to be... an ancient altar," Liu Yong said, breaking the silence. He closely examined the runes on the wall as his mechanical arm’s scanner emitted rapid, urgent beeps.
Sun Yue, instead of scouting as usual, stayed behind to help organize the scattered books. He carefully collected the fallen pages and arranged them in order. "The order of these books seems to... contain a certain pattern."
"What pattern?" Chu Feng asked, walking over.
Sun Yue pointed to the runes on the pages. "These runes... they seem to be the same script as those on the walls, just arranged differently."
Chu Feng observed the runes closely, and a flash of realization struck him. "Could it be... that these books are the key to activating the altar?"
As they pondered this, a dazzling light flared from the stone platform in the center of the altar, and a massive runic array appeared before them. The array rotated slowly, emitting powerful energy waves that threatened to consume everything.
Fearing for Chu Feng’s safety, Pan Yue clutched his sleeve, her eyes filled with a mix of worry and tenderness. Chu Feng felt her concern and felt a warmth in his heart. He patted her hand gently to reassure her.
"It seems... we’ve found the right path," Chu Feng said, his eyes gleaming with excitement.
"Wait!" Sun Yue suddenly stopped him. "These runes... I think I’ve seen them somewhere before..." He flipped through the book in his hand and pointed to a specific page. "Here! The runes recorded on this page match the altar exactly!"
Sun Yue compared the two, discovering a subtle connection. He pointed to a special symbol on the page. "This rune... it means 'activate'!"
"Activate what?" Pan Yue asked.
Sun Yue didn't answer; instead, he pressed his finger against the special rune.
*Hum—*
The runic array on the altar accelerated, the light becoming blinding. A powerful suction force pulled everyone into its grip.
"Hold on to me!" Chu Feng shouted.
A brilliant white light engulfed the underground altar. Chu Feng felt the world spin, the sound of a raging gale roaring in his ears. He gripped Pan Yue’s hand tightly, the energy of the shadow runes surging through his body to resist the overwhelming pull.
After what felt like an eternity, the suction faded and the white light dissipated. Chu Feng opened his eyes to find himself and his team standing in a narrow corridor. The walls were lined with ancient, glowing runes that lit the way ahead.
"Looks like we bet on the right thing," Liu Yong said, his voice tinged with excitement as he looked at the runes. He walked to a stone door at the end of the corridor, his mechanical arm whirring as it analyzed the mechanism.
"Let me try," Sun Yue volunteered, stepping forward. His nimble fingers danced across the stone door as if playing an ancient instrument. The runes flickered in response to his touch, emitting crisp clicks.
With a *clack*, the mechanism disengaged, and a secret door slowly swung open. The team looked toward the space behind the door with excitement and anticipation, expecting new discoveries.
However, a powerful suction force suddenly erupted from behind the door, as if it intended to swallow them whole.
"Look out!" Chu Feng yelled. The power of his shadow runes surged, anchoring him firmly to the ground.
"What’s happening?" Pan Yue cried out, feeling as though she were being pulled in.
"This suction... it’s even stronger than before!" Chen Qiang gritted his teeth, using his shield to resist the pull, though he could feel his strength waning rapidly.
Liu Yong’s mechanical arm gripped the runes on the wall, struggling to stabilize himself, but he felt as though the limb were about to be torn from his body. Wu Xia hugged Officer Fang tightly, her face pale.
"It seems... we’ve run into trouble again," Sun Yue said with a bitter smile, his body already tilting uncontrollably forward.
Chu Feng watched his teammates being drawn toward the darkness, his heart filled with anxiety. He took a deep breath, the power of the shadow runes churning madly within him.
"Hold on to me!" He roared, pulling Pan Yue tightly into his arms.
An even more potent wave of shadow energy erupted from Chu Feng, forming a black barrier that enveloped the team, shielding them from the terrifying suction.
"Hold on!" Chu Feng gritted his teeth. "I will get you all out of here!"
The darkness behind the secret door was like a giant beast, its maw agape, hungering to devour them. Chu Feng could feel the energy of his shadow runes depleting rapidly; if he didn't find a way out, they would all be pulled in.
Suddenly, he felt his long blade vibrate slightly, the shadow runes on the steel flickering with a strange light. A thought struck him, and he plunged the blade into the ground. A beam of black light shot from the sword, piercing directly into the darkness behind the door.
"What is that?" Pan Yue gasped.
Chu Feng didn't answer. He gripped the sword firmly, feeling as though he and the shadow runes on the blade had become one.
*Crack—*
A sharp sound echoed, and the suction from behind the door suddenly vanished.
"Did it work?" Liu Yong asked in surprise.
However, before anyone could breathe a sigh of relief, a cold, chilling voice emanated from the darkness behind the door: "Who... are you?"
