Chapter 19: The Perilous Path Back into the Cave
The light gradually faded, revealing before them the energy cavern they had explored before. The vines around the entrance had grown even more luxuriant, twisting like snarling beasts, concealing the opening more tightly. A thicker mist than before hung in the air, swirling like specters, exuding a mysterious and perilous aura that stirred unease in everyone’s hearts.
The team exchanged glances, each seeing a flicker of apprehension in the others’ eyes. Their previous expedition into this cavern had left a deep impression; the dangers and strangeness they encountered remained vivid in their memories.
“Is this... really the same place?” Sun Yue swallowed hard, her voice trembling slightly.
“Looks like we’ve come back,” Chen Qiang said in a low voice, his grip tightening involuntarily on his weapon.
Chu Feng frowned deeply, conflicted feelings churning within him. Entering this unknown and perilous cavern again filled him with hesitation and fear. Yet, to strengthen the team’s overall power and find the means to resist the apocalypse, he had to summon his courage and overcome his inner dread.
Pan Yue seemed to sense Chu Feng’s unease. She gently took his hand, offering him a supportive look. Chu Feng drew a deep breath, his gaze steadily hardening.
“Let’s go,” he said solemnly, “we have to see what’s inside.”
The team encouraged one another and cautiously approached the entrance. Pushing aside the dense vines, the cavern mouth appeared once more. A chill emanated from within, causing involuntary shivers.
“Be careful,” Chu Feng warned. “This time might be even more dangerous than before.”
Everyone nodded, gripping their weapons tightly as they followed Chu Feng inside.
The interior was pitch black, pitch-dark to the point of not seeing one’s hand. Wu Xia lit a glow stick, its faint light illuminating a small circle around them.
“Wait!” Sun Yue suddenly stopped, pointing ahead. “What’s that?”
Everyone looked in the direction she indicated, catching a glimpse of a shadow flickering in the dim light...
“Watch out!” Chu Feng shouted, shielding Pan Yue behind him.
The shadow moved with lightning speed and suddenly appeared before them.
Only now did they see clearly—it was a creature covered in black scales, its eyes glowing with a crimson light, its mouth filled with razor-sharp teeth, emitting a nauseating stench of decay.
Before anyone could react, the beast opened its blood-red jaws and lunged at the nearest target—Sun Yue.
She screamed, dodging backward but still got slashed on the arm by its claws. Blood gushed out immediately, staining her sleeve red.
“Damn it!” Chen Qiang roared, raising his shield to block the attack.
The claws struck the shield with a screeching metallic clang. Chen Qiang was pushed back several steps by the force, his arm numb from the impact.
“Everyone, be alert! These monsters are faster and stronger than the ones we faced before!” Chu Feng cautioned, his eyes sharp as the power of the shadow runes surged within him.
“Shadow Strike!” he whispered fiercely, vanishing like a phantom.
Reappearing behind the monster, he thrust his dagger like a venomous snake, piercing the creature’s weak spot.
The monster howled in agony and collapsed with a thunderous crash. Black blood sprayed from the wound, staining the ground in darkness.
“Amazing!” Sun Yue admired Chu Feng, while the others cast approving looks his way.
Yet before relief could settle, deep within the cavern, a series of ferocious roars echoed once more.
Immediately, more monsters emerged from the darkness, their eyes gleaming with greed as they charged forward.
“Prepare to fight!” Chu Feng commanded gravely. He knew a fierce battle was inevitable.
His daggers flashed relentlessly, each strike filled with lethal intent. The power of the shadow runes coursed through him, granting him extraordinary speed and strength.
Inside the cavern, blades clashed and battle cries rang out.
Chu Feng moved like a ghost among the monsters, every attack precise and deadly. Using the cavern’s terrain to his advantage, he evaded assaults and seized every opportunity to counter.
One monster opened its huge jaws and lunged at him. Chu Feng swiftly sidestepped, then his dagger shot out like lightning, piercing the creature’s throat.
The monster let out a bitter roar and fell.
Chu Feng vanished again only to reappear behind another foe.
“Wind Blade!” he whispered sharply, his dagger slicing through the air, releasing a black blade of wind that cleaved the monster in two.
“Chu Feng, are you alright?” a gentle voice asked softly by his ear.
He turned to see Pan Yue watching him with concern.
“I’m fine,” Chu Feng smiled faintly.
Pan Yue retrieved a towel from her backpack and gently wiped the sweat from his brow.
“Watch out!” Liu Yong suddenly shouted.
Before his warning faded, a gigantic spider plummeted from the cavern ceiling, its sharp legs striking toward Chu Feng’s face.
At the last moment, Pan Yue pushed Chu Feng aside, nearly taking the blow herself.
Chu Feng’s heart raced as he quickly rose, slashing several of the spider’s legs with his dagger.
The injured spider emitted a shrill screech, thrashing its massive body and kicking up dust.
During a brief lull in the battle, Pan Yue anxiously checked Chu Feng for injuries.
“Are you alright?” Her soft voice trembled slightly, her tender gaze warming Chu Feng’s heart.
He gently squeezed her hand, silently conveying gratitude. Amidst the perilous cavern, their feelings quietly deepened.
“Everyone, be careful! These monsters are fiercer than before!” Chen Qiang shouted, shield raised as he blocked another attack.
“Master Lin, what should we do now?” Wu Xia asked cautiously, eyes scanning their surroundings.
But Master Lin did not respond as usual by directing their defense. Instead, he turned to Sun Yue: “You take command.”
This unexpected order stunned Sun Yue. Pointing at himself awkwardly, he said, “Me? But...”
“Trust your instincts,” Master Lin said calmly, yet with unshakable certainty.
The sudden responsibility overwhelmed Sun Yue, yet it also awakened his potential. Taking a deep breath, he forced himself to calm down and began analyzing the situation.
Noticing the cavern’s layout and the monsters’ attack patterns, he quickly devised a simple strategy:
“Chen Qiang, draw their attention. Liu Yong, provide ranged support. Wu Xia, be ready to heal...”
“Wait,” Chu Feng interrupted. “Master Lin, why...?”
“Do as he says,” Master Lin’s voice remained serene, his eyes deep as if seeing all.
Though puzzled, Chu Feng chose to obey.
Under Sun Yue’s command, the team coordinated smoothly, gradually regaining their footing.
Sun Yue’s leadership grew more confident as he keenly read the battle’s shifts, adjusting tactics accordingly.
The team worked like precise gears, driving back one monster after another.
Just as they thought the situation was improving, a low rumble suddenly echoed from the cavern’s depths, the ground trembling slightly.
“Not good...” Sun Yue’s face paled. “A greater danger is coming!”
The fighting paused momentarily. The cavern lay in chaos—fallen monster corpses and scattered debris everywhere.
The air was thick with the stench of blood and burning, inducing waves of nausea.
The team leaned against the cavern walls, gasping for breath, sweat soaking their clothes.
Yet despite exhaustion, every face shone with undeniable excitement and pride.
Their earlier battle had not only repelled fierce enemies but also showcased unprecedented teamwork under Sun Yue’s command.
Pan Yue took out a handkerchief, carefully wiping the bloodstains from Chu Feng’s face.
Feeling her care, warmth flooded Chu Feng’s heart, as if all fatigue vanished.
“Sun Yue, you’re really something!” Chen Qiang grinned broadly, patting Sun Yue on the shoulder with admiration.
Sun Yue scratched his head sheepishly, chuckling, “I’m just bluffing; everyone worked well together.”
Though still taciturn, Liu Yong’s eyes revealed appreciation. He silently approached Sun Yue and handed him a bottle of water.
Wu Xia stepped beside Master Lin, whispering, “Master Lin, why did you suddenly assign Sun Yue to lead?”
Master Lin’s gaze was profound as he looked toward the cavern’s depths. Slowly, he said, “Everyone has their shining moment; sometimes they just need a chance to awaken it. Sun Yue’s intuition is sharp—he’s suited to lead in critical times.”
“What should we do next?” Wu Xia asked, her eyes uneasy as they fixed on the cavern’s depths.
Master Lin did not answer immediately. Instead, his eyes swept around and finally settled on the energy source at the cavern’s center, which emitted an eerie glow.
His brow furrowed, sensing something amiss.
“Do you feel it? The energy fluctuations here seem abnormal,” Master Lin said gravely.
The team turned their gaze to the energy source.
What had seemed peaceful now pulsed irregularly, as if something stirred restlessly inside.
“This is definitely off,” Chu Feng stepped forward, scrutinizing the energy source closely.
“It looks like someone tampered with the energy here—maybe a trap has been set.”
At his words, everyone’s expressions grew grave.
They realized the energy source was far more complicated than they had imagined; one wrong move could trigger an unpredictable disaster.
Pan Yue grasped Chu Feng’s arm, her worry evident: “Chu Feng, let’s be cautious. This place is too dangerous.”
“I know,” Chu Feng squeezed her hand, offering a reassuring look.
He understood there was no turning back—they had to find a way to resolve this.
“We must find a way to stop the energy from spiraling out of control,” Chu Feng declared firmly, scanning their surroundings.
At that moment, the rumbling from deep within the cavern grew louder and more violent; the entire cavern shook violently.
“It’s coming!” Sun Yue’s face went pale, his voice trembling.
“We have to get out of here!” Chen Qiang grabbed his shield, positioning himself protectively before the team.
Yet Master Lin shook his head, eyes locked on the energy source’s direction.
“No,” he said slowly. “We must see what is causing this.”
Without waiting, Master Lin stepped forward toward the energy source.
“Master Lin...” Wu Xia called out in alarm, but Master Lin did not look back.
The others exchanged glances and quietly followed Master Lin’s lead, cautiously advancing toward the glowing energy source.
