Chapter Thirty-Five: All Women, Yet Such Vast Differences

Wang Zheng stood in front of the mirror, adjusting his clothes over and over, tugging at the collar of his crisp white shirt. Good, not bad at all!
Today was his first day at work, and Wang Zheng was brimming with anticipation, excitement, and, of course, curiosity. Faced with a new way of life, new experiences, different insights, and a changed path of the heart, all while trying to alter the things that cannot be changed—there was such a thrill in it all!
"Are you really going to work?" Bai Bing leaned against the wall, watching Wang Zheng as he fussed with his appearance. She’d always thought that Wang Zheng was all talk in front of women, which was why he’d said what he had yesterday. Never did she expect that he’d actually go through with it. A one-man company, without even the means to pay a salary—what was that? A sole proprietor?
"Of course! I told you, I never lie to women," Wang Zheng replied, glancing at Bai Bing in the mirror. To accuse him of deceiving women was the gravest insult imaginable!
"I just don’t get why you’re going. If you like her, just say so directly. So what if you get rejected? No one knows anyone here—why go through all this trouble? For a lecher like you, you sure have thin skin," Bai Bing said, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
"It’s not that my skin is thin—it’s just that no one’s thicker than yours," Wang Zheng retorted coldly. "You, who’ve never loved or been loved, are hardly in a position to mock me. You look all pure on the outside but are as fiery as garlic within—what, do you think you’re a clove of garlic?"
"You’re the garlic!" Bai Bing shot back, but then she paused, studying Wang Zheng. "So, you really do like her?"
"Everyone loves beautiful things. There isn’t a man alive who doesn’t like a beautiful woman. But you should know that liking and loving are two very different things. I like her, but that doesn’t mean I love her. Not that you’d understand, so why don’t you go find somewhere else to be?" Wang Zheng carefully combed his short hair, making sure every strand was in place, determined to leave the brightest impression in Lin Xiaolei’s heart.
"You’re just making excuses for being a lecher. I really don’t see what’s so special about her," Bai Bing said, tilting her head in stubborn frustration as she tried to find Lin Xiaolei’s good points. But having only met her twice, aside from her looks, she couldn’t come up with a single one.
"Beautiful, pure, gentle, sexy, and adorable—a virgin, no less. Isn’t that enough?" Wang Zheng said with a look of utter infatuation, then glanced at Bai Bing. "Women’s jealousy truly is frightening!"
Before Cinderella put on her glass slipper, she was just a weary servant; before a caterpillar became a butterfly, it was trapped in its own cocoon. Bai Bing had always been a proud princess—how could she understand such transformation? And to witness it unfold—wasn’t that a beautiful thing?
"Jealous? Hmph! I fit all those descriptions, so what would I be jealous of?" Bai Bing retorted haughtily.
"You fit them?" Wang Zheng frowned, giving her a thorough once-over, as if seeing her for the first time—enough to make Bai Bing uncomfortable.
"What are you staring at? Never seen a beauty before?" she snapped.
"Beautiful, pure, gentle, sexy, adorable, and a virgin—these are like ghosts: men talk about them, but no one’s actually seen one. I’m lucky to finally witness one, but do me a favor and stop ruining the legend, will you? Go look in the bathroom mirror and see which of those you actually fit," Wang Zheng replied shamelessly. In his eyes, this was Bai Bing’s true self.

Beautiful? Barely passable. Pure? Not seeing it. Gentle? Yeah, right. Sexy? Not even close. Adorable? Give me a break. Virgin? Highly doubtful...
After staring at his reflection for a long while and making sure every hair was in place, Wang Zheng turned to Bai Bing and, pointing at the mirror, said, "The guy in the mirror is seriously handsome!"
Before Bai Bing could retch, Wang Zheng made a quick escape. But as he reached the stairwell, he stopped short, frowning as he saw Bai Bing following behind him.
"What are you doing?" he groaned inwardly. Oh heavens, what sort of woman is this scoundrel?
"I’m going to work with you!" Bai Bing replied, entirely unfazed, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"Work? Since when do you work?"
"I’m your secretary!"
Wang Zheng clenched his fists, feeling an overwhelming urge to knock her out. But this was a residential complex—who knew how many women were watching from their windows? He couldn’t risk ruining his image. After a moment’s consideration, he decided to let her be—she’d destroy herself soon enough.
Seeing Wang Zheng’s expression gradually relax, Bai Bing maintained her dignified businesswoman facade, but inside she was overjoyed. She was one step closer to her goal—now all that was left was to cause some trouble.
Following Lin Xiaolei’s directions, Wang Zheng arrived at Yong’an Tower, a commercial office building frequented by well-dressed young professionals. By the entrance, over twenty plaques listed the building’s various companies and their floor numbers, clear and organized.
He pulled out his phone to confirm the location, then waited downstairs. Before long, his attention drifted to the stylish women entering and exiting the building—fashionable, attractive, the very picture of professional elegance. Occasionally, an older woman would pass by, her skillful makeup making it hard to guess her true age. Understandable—after thirty, men strive to appear more mature, while women do everything to look younger.
The term "career woman" had always intrigued Wang Zheng, even back in Africa. Today, he was finally seeing them in person. While not every one of them was stunning, there were certainly a few who caught the eye—and that was more than enough.
Wang Zheng straightened his back, making his athletic physique stand out, hoping to draw attention from the beautiful women around. To be an aesthete, one must possess three qualities: a strong body, a lecherous mind, and an utterly shameless look when admiring beauty.
Soon, through the glass doors, he spotted Lin Xiaolei stepping out of the elevator. Head held high, chest out, stomach in, shoulders back, hands relaxed at her sides, moving gracefully with her stride—her walk was light and effortless.
What an elegant, captivating gait! A woman’s poise is often revealed in the simplest of gestures—even walking can showcase her temperament. The uninitiated see only the surface; those in the know recognize the essence.

As Lin Xiaolei emerged from the building and saw Wang Zheng waiting outside, a flicker of surprise lit her eyes, though it quickly vanished. Even now, she found it hard to believe there was someone willing to join her company without pay. It was strange—she barely knew anything about this man except his name, yet she’d agreed to let him join. Was that too hasty?
Refuse him? There seemed no reason to. And deep down, she felt an inexplicable trust in him. Perhaps it was because he’d encouraged her when she was struggling—was that why? She didn’t know. Lin Xiaolei gave her head a little shake; right now, she had no other choice.
In any case… he seemed like a decent person, she thought.
"Lin... should I call you Boss Lin or Manager Lin?" Wang Zheng asked.
"Just call me Xiaolei," she replied. Boss? Manager? The words brought a bitter smile to her lips. With not even a single employee, what kind of boss was she?
"That won’t do. I’m your assistant now, and you’re my boss—what assistant calls their boss by their first name? Hmm… how about this: when we’re alone, I’ll call you Xiaolei; when others are around, I’ll call you Manager. How’s that?"
Xiaolei—it sounded so warm and intimate, instantly closing the distance between them. Wang Zheng rather liked the name.
"Alright, but… what about her?" Lin Xiaolei looked in confusion at the other woman standing behind Wang Zheng. She’d seen her at the bar, and again yesterday, and now here she was. What exactly was the relationship between this woman and Wang Zheng? Were they lovers?
"I’m his secretary!" Bai Bing stepped forward, pointing at Wang Zheng.
Huh?
Wang Zheng frowned. This crazy woman was acting up again. In this harmonious society, how could such a shameless person exist? He almost wanted to carve a few words on her face, but the circumstances wouldn’t allow it.
"Bai Bing, you… it’s a good thing society is civilized these days!"
